THE THREE SAVING GRACES OF “HEY DIBI”

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Note to readers: In case you’re wondering why there are so many grammatical errors as far as the content of some of these questions goes, that’s because I’ve left them as is. I haven’t edited or corrected the comments and questions people have been asking for “Hey Dibi”. Sometimes I get a kick out of the typos and terrible sentence structures. I mean, I know I’m not perfect in this area, either. There are probably a lot of errors you can find in this paragraph alone. But, man…someone once wrote me something and misspelled the word “ocean”. Seriously. They wrote “oshen”. So, anyway, instead of acting the part of the Spelling Gestapo here, I’m just gonna go with the flow and let you guys get a kick out of the type of stuff I get to read every day.

And now back to our regularly scheduled program…

"The Three Graces"

hi dibi, what do you think is your greatest attribute and your biggest flaw as a human being? - Anonymous

Dibi: Patience and impatience. The great thing about being human is we get to play both sides of the record.

————————————————————————————–
Hey Dibi, how does nathan stay so fit and trim. I’ve seen him eat JUNK. soda after soda, candy to the max. real sweet tooth! - alec k.

Dibi: He surfs more than anyone I know.

————————————————————————————–

Did the Fletches sit down to family dinners every night? - Kent Smythe

Dibi: It depended on what everyone was doing and at what age they were. When they were younger, yes, but as they got older and the surf was good or whatever. I left dinner for them in the fridge and everyone ate when it was convienient.

————————————————————————————–

Well since Christian asked it, Dibi, what do YOU think about affirmative action? - Aaron Perron

Dibi: I think people should be hired based on skill!

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, does your family own Tar Farms in San Juan? Just curious. - Carrie M.

Dibi: Yes.

Hi Dibi. What do you think is a trait people see as bad and negative but you think is actually very good? - Justin Newsome

Dibi: Honesty; it’s been traded in for political correctness. UGH!

————————————————————————————–

What were Christian and nathan like as little groms? - Jessica Hines

Dibi: They were so cute and loving. We had a great time!

————————————————————————————–

Dang, Greyson kills it. But how come he skates so much without the helmet? Dibi make him! - R.T.

Dibi: Thanks, I have…

————————————————————————————–

Dibi can you ask christian this for me? i heard he and hosoi hate each other. true? why? or stupid rumors? thanks! - HVSkateMethod

Dibi: I don’t think that’s true; they see each other at skate events occasionally and I have an interview they did together awhile back, and they seem fine to me.

————————————————————————————–

Greyboy’s fucking awesome. He can dominate the sk8 world. He gonna be on dside or some other intervews soon for other mags, never seen a Q&a with him ever? - Lee Ellings

Dibi: Thanks, I’m planning to interview him, Christian and Herb for the D-Side soon.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi! Ever think of showing the D-Side interviews with YOU in the video? Would love to see you interacting and not behind the camera! Thanks! Love ‘em! - Diana Prestiss

Dibi: I’ve thought about it, but I always want it to be about the person I’m interviewing. Herb wants me to set up a table and chairs or something, but I not sure that I like the idea. I’ll have to think about it a bit more.

————————————————————————————–

Do you guys have the extra copy of Thrasher magaizine with christian on it? I’ll buy it from you. I reallyl want it.If you doplease let me knows ok! - tom rocha

Dibi: No, I’m sorry, I sure don’t. I called the guys at the mag awhile back and they sent me a CD of the article for my personel collection.

————————————————————————————–

Well Christian I mostly come to FB and not websites but admit I do check out your mom’s Hey Dibi and those DSide interviews. If I could ask Dibi something, I’d want to ask her Prop 8, for or against? And for the Dside can we put in requests or suggestions about interview subjects? - Mike S.

Dibi: The thing I find scary about the issue, is that one judge can override the votes of 7,000,000 people. Our constitutional right to have a say is no longer relevant?!? WOW! And, sure, you can put in requests…but that doesn’t mean I can always pull it off. But I’m interested.

————————————————————————————–

Thanks for all the great personal pics! Please keep them coming it’s great you let us take a peek into your lives! - Cass Osment

Dibi; Thanks, it’s fun to see some of them again myself.

————————————————————————————–

What do you think is the best taste in the world and the worst smell in the world? - Ted Hill

Dibi: I’m seriously addicted to Vietnamese chili garlic sauce. Man, it makes your nose run, your eyes water, it’s great! And the worst smell in the world are Christian and Greyson’s socks!!!

————————————————————————————–

how tall R the Fletcher men? - Abby LaRue

Dibi: Christian, Nathan, and Greyson are all around 5′10″, and Herb’s around 5′8″.

————————————————————————————–

How do you feel about a Catholic church being built next to a playground? - Timothy Daniel Flynn

Dibi: Sounds fine to me; throw in some great stained glass, beautiful architecture, and I think we’re good to go. Unless a McD’s is available because, of course, they should be on every available corner.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi can you ask CF if he likes doing airs still or is he sick of doing them? - Malachai Scott

Dibi: It’s him!

————————————————————————————–

I LOVED the photo of you and Nathan! What a beautiful young family! So my question is, I recollect reading that you said you had the boys at a young age. Do you think you would have been a different kind of mother if you had the children at let’s say, 30+? - No Name

Dibi: Of course, I woundn’t have been the same as I was as a teenager. But I have no regrets, I did the best with what I knew, and the beat goes on.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, I want to know who Cf thinks wore the pants in the family? You or Herbie? - Troy Maude

Dibi: Herb was really lucky and got to spend so much time playing with the boys, while I took them to the orthodontist, school, had the parent-teacher conferences, the visits to the principle, you know the job. That’s just the way it was, and now we all work together, and it’s still the way it is and everyone seems to be stoked so I guess that’s the answer.

————————————————————————————–

again again, where are the grommet shots of Nathan? you promised…. S.W.

Dibi: Nathan likes his privacy and I try to be respectful of that.

————————————————————————————–

What’s a bad habit you wish you could stop cold turkey? (BTW, Hi Mom! I love you! I’m on Christian Fletcher’s website! ;) ) - Casey Meisher

Dibi: I’m really rather controlled -duh-in what I do, so I’ve tried to eliminate bad habits years ago…and I’ve remained pretty successful with it.

————————————————————————————–

DIBI! I LOVE YOU! DO YOU LIKE CHIPS AND SALSA?! I DO! - MARTIN ZUNIGA

Dibi: I’m more into veggies with salsa, but I do adore hot sauce.

————————————————————————————–

Thank you for this! I get diff perspective I never knew and admit I judged you guys but reading things from Dibi’s perspective even with short replies, it makes me really think of the human level that we are all one and wear our pants one leg at a time! Christian your mom made me rethink a lot of judgments i had about you braddah! Hoooo! - Kai L.

Dibi: That’s very nice, thank you. Everyone’s life is filled with ups and down, but being able to laugh at ourselves so we don’t take things too seriously is really great.

————————————————————————————–

Dibi, your thoughts on Oprah, BP, the recession, scented candles, Nathan’s hairstyle, other traction companies, and the summer weather thus far. - Tom Merrill

Dibi: Who cares, we still need drilling, they’re usually too heavily scented, it seems to suit him, they SUCK, and the last couple of days have been great.

————————————————————————————–

Watching the old vids, reminds me of good times. Whatever happened to good ole Gack? - J.J.

Dibi: He got so old he had to be put down.

————————————————————————————–

You guys always make me laugh and have great stuff to come back to. Astrodeck’s site should have Dside and this question and answer stuff too not just on christians, you guys will get mroe audience maybe? ah fuck it i aint telling you how to do your jobs good work guys! lol. - carlos hueriziga

Dibi: I’m glad you enjoy it. I have fun doing my part.

————————————————————————————–

Great interview with Bruce. That guy is classic. Andy’s was a good one too. When we gonna see your 2nd boy, Mrs. Fletcher on the D-Side? - John Petersen

Dibi: I’m not sure that he’d like to do it; he’s very shy and I respect that.

Greyson Fletcher: The Next in Line

Greyson Fletcher: The Next Pilot At Flight Academy

Nathan’s been back in town and he’s been surfing a lot with Bruce Irons, who’s also in town for the summer. They’ve been coming around Astrodeck and hanging out here in San Clemente. Bruce grabbed some Wave Warriors and Christian Fletcher t-shirts. Little fucker’s got some good taste.

We’ve all been skating, too. In fact, just went last night to the San Clemente Skate Park. Bruce is stoked on Greyson and wants to take skate lessons from him. Haha, he even filmed Greyson on his iPhone going balls-out at the skate park; Greyson fucking flies.

But what’s up with all these kids riding scooters? They’re sissying shit up with their scooters and rollerblades; wearing knee pads, elbow pads, helmets, wristguards, shinguards, mouth pieces, damn hockey masks, bras, girdles, jock straps…I mean, don’t get me wrong on this subject. Safety is definitely important, especially on a little grom. But seems like kids are just too babied nowadays.

Things were so different back when I was a kid. We just went skating, you know? Just got up and left. We didn’t have to fucking make it such a huge deal to pack stuff up and worry about shit. If we got hurt, we sucked it up. You cracked your skull? Tough. Duct tape the shit out of it, fag. Brain matter spilling out to the pavement? You’re fine. You gouged your knee?  It’s spouting blood out like a sprinkler system? Too bad, crybaby. Get back on that half-pipe and don’t get off it until you do a handplant. That’s an order!

These Soccer Moms come to the skate parks in their SUV tanks and just unleash their kids, who, for the most part, are just kinda lazying around and being in the way with their scooters. And it’s so funny when these moms get all pissed when actual skateboarders come to ride the SKATE park. They seem to vibe you with some kind of sense of entitlement. They don’t like it when their little Bartholomew has his scooter kicked away from the combi-bowl.

But what I really love are the moms who bust out their cell phones and call the cops. That’s a scene in itself; When you see all the skate kids without the proper “safety uniform” run to the hills to hide. They don’t want to get busted and be given a ticket. So it’s funny when they haul on ass outta there. It’s like when you turn the lights on in a seedy motel room and the cockroaches go scurrying off, seeking shelter in the dark. Hahaha. That’s exactly what it’s like at these skate parks when the pigs show up and wanna cite the groms $265 tickets for not wearing proper gear.

Haha, that’s pretty much what happened to Greyson last night. The kid just bailed. Bruce, Nathan, Greyson and I were skating when those donut-hogging assholes suddenly showed up after some scoot bitches had a blistering hemorrhoid over our mere presence and called them. What tattletales. The next thing I know is that Greyson’s gone. Peaced on out in 10 seconds flat. Couldn’t find him anywhere. Finally realized that he had jumped a barbed wire fence, tore his pants, and was hiding out in the bushes across the street.

I should buy Greyson some camo paint so he can smear that shit on his face and blend in with the plants more naturally next time.

WALTER HOFFMAN SURFS BETTER THAN YOU

WALTER HOFFMAN SURFS BETTER THAN YOU

Well, I’m posting this blog one day early. My grandpa’s birthday is actually tomorrow, July 27th. He’s gonna be 79-years-old and he’s still gnarly as ever. He doesn’t know how to play bingo and sit down in a rocking chair and vegetate. And you know what? I’m pretty fucking okay with that, ’cause he’s radder than all of us and he always will be.

Check out the video link below for a D-Side interview he did with Dibi and Herbie.

Dibi Fletcher with baby Nathan

Dibi Fletcher with baby Nathan

ANOTHER INSTALLMENT OF “HEY DIBI” WHERE YOU ASK THE QUESTIONS AND DIBI TELLS IT LIKE IT IS. ENJOY.

Hi dibi, how are you doing? my question is did christian and nathan compete in the nssa or wsa? - billy rides waves

Dibi: Yes, they both were in the NSSA. Christian was kicked-out when he did a clothing ad for Stussy, and Nathan wanted to go to Metallica’s Monsters of Rock concert instead of the Nationals in Texas. So I guess it was shades of things to come.

————————————————————————————–

Nice job with “Hey Dibi” but my slight comment or suggestion is perhaps you can be a little more detailed in your answers? Love to read what you have to say but they’re such brief and quick answers! Please don’t see this as criticism! I look forward to “Hey Dibi” each and every time! - Tamara K.

Dibi: I’m used to talking and working with men and you have a sentence, perhaps, to get your point across. Women, of course, want something more in-depth; it’s difficult to try to satisfy both in this medium, but I’ll try.

————————————————————————————–

Is Christian really running for city council? Man that’s coming full circle! He’s got my vote! - JDawg

Dibi: He’s considering all possibilities at this time. He’s got my vote also.

————————————————————————————–

I love Greyson Fletcher! Is this really his brother’s site? Does Greyson have a girlfriend? Can you post up some regular photos of him not just sk8 ones? :) :) :) - Michelle92657

Dibi: This is his father’s site. No girlfriend at present, and we’ll be posting new shots frequently.

————————————————————————————–

Shit i dont know i didn’t really have a question i guess i just wanted to say hi and maybe see if you say hi back. So hi dibi. lol. - Paul Serrano

Dibi: Hey Dude, how’s it goin’?

————————————————————————————–

What happened to the D-Side interviews? You guys were busting them out all the time and now its kinda stopped. How goes it? - JM

Dibi: We’re waiting to have our site updated so we can post them directly and not go through YouTube.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, I was curious as to who Astrodeck draws as far as the international market and fan base goes? - Ed Pierson

Dibi: I don’t really understand what you’re asking, but we’ve been around so long and traveled the world that I think we have friends all over who share our love for surf, art, and pushing the envelope.

————————————————————————————–

What are the dates for when Christian will be in Tampa for the wrestling demos? I am looking forward to seeing him! I live in New Jersey but defintely won’t miss this if he will be in Florida! - Greg Pleibert

Dibi: I’m not sure of the dates right now as it has been put off a couple of times due to unforseen circumstances.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, those pics of Bruce and Archy and Nathan with Herbie at the Mentawais was sick. Herbie has a sick site. But I have a question and call me stupid but does Bruce ride for Astrodeck? Or is Wave Warriors a different company altogether? he had a sick Wave Warriors shirt on. So sick I want one! - Gable Oda

Dibi: Thanks, I think Herb does great photos also. Bruce was/is a huge fan of the Wave Warriors series and certainly is one himself. Herb had a few shirts made to give to some of the guys that he admires.

————————————————————————————–

Chrisian fletcher in politics? !!! What’ s next???!! !!! Is he going to be opera singer! ???? or join navy!  Anything is possible for crazy fletcher! he the man! - Mr. Black

Dibi: Opera singer sounds cool, I think he’s a bit old for the Navy though.

————————————————————————————–

Goodness you are very beautiful Dibi! Is that another Bruce Weber photo? - Janice Padilla

Dibi: Thank you. No, that photo you’re talking about was taken by Herb.

————————————————————————————–

DIBI I NEED HELP! I CANT STOP WATCHING TWEAK FREAKS ON MY VHS MACHINE ITS GONNA BREAK DOWN SOON WHY DONT YOU GUYS MAKE MOVIES LIKE THIS ANYMORE?????????? IM BURNING MY TAPE PLAYER AND I DONT WANT TO STOP WATCHING TWEAK FREAKS MORNING DAY AND NIGHT!! 24 FUKKKEN 7!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - Lunacidal Tendencies

Dibi: Herb and I just don’t have the time right now to go to the beach like we used to, but we’re working on a couple of new film projects.

————————————————————————————–

Hello Dibi, enjoy reading your insights to all things and life in general. I’m a mom with two sons myself who are now 28 and 32 and boy, I tell ya, they’ve put me through the ringer! There were times when I just crumbled to the floor but I lived with the hope that they’d “come around” eventually and they have! Reading about you and your family has made me feel so “human” and though there are still struggles on a daily basis in my own life, I truly feel a maternal kinship with you. It’s so wonderful to see Christian interacting with his fans on Facebook. He seems so healthy and positive! And he’s also very funny and I never knew he had that side to him! His Barrack Obama photos are a crack-up! What’s your take on this whole social networking and message board forums such as the one you use on Christian’s site here? We sure didn’t have the internet when we were kids, did we, Dibi? Thank you for this! Many blessings to you and your family! - Joan R.

Dibi: Life as a Mom was certainly nothing that I ever could have imagined. Lots of heartache, loneliness, and tough times, but seems like the sun is finally starting to shine. We’re all working together and enjoying each others company, which I never thought would happen just a few years ago. How cool. CF does have an incredible sense of humor and I’m glad that he has a chance to share it…I think people are really disarmed by it, which I think is humourous in itself. Good luck with your family and thanks for the support.

————————————————————————————–

If Nathan was the firstborn son and Christian the second born son, do you think they would still be the same people they are today? - Getting Deep with Dibi

Dibi: Yes, they would still be themselves, but I’m sure there would be some different twist to their personalities due to the birth order.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi. See any good movies lately? - Eric Lindley

Dibi: No, I’m sorry to say. I’ve been working, making art and reading.

————————————————————————————–

Did Christian grow up with any limits or restrictions like curfews, chores, etc. Or did he pretty much rock and roll and do whatever the hell he fucking felt like? - Kev-O

Dibi: My Dad gave us four lessons to live by: A Hoffman doesn’t lie, cheat, steal, or play ball in the house. I figured that pretty much takes care of it.

————————————————————————————–

Greyson Fletcher is pretty cool. I first heard of him from John from Cincinnati and had no idea he came from this surf royalty. Is he going to do more shows and maybe movies soon? If I give you guys my address is there a way you guys can get me a signed photo? Thanks! - Craig Dalton

Dibi: Greyson has no plans to do anything with Hollywood anytime soon. He’s surfing, skating, and having the time of his life. So sorry we don’t have photos available now, check in later.

————————————————————————————–

Ok is Christian really running for San Clemente mayor? Or are you pulling our legs? Inquiring minds want to know dammit! - Steven Bailer

Dibi: It’s City Councilman, and he’s keeping all options open.

————————————————————————————–

Why did Christian hate Richie Collins and Pat O’Connell does he still hate them? I heard about why hates Ian Carns tho! - Kuriosity Kat Killer

Dibi: I don’t remember, and I don’t think CF gives a shit anymore.

————————————————————————————–

Yo Mama Fletcher, what bugs you out? - Danny Weithmer

Dibi: Insincerity!

————————————————————————————–

Dibi your a chick so you can answer this but why dont you girls like hairy guys? It’s hard for me to always manscape and please you women! - Hairy Hank

Dibi: I could care less, and I don’t pretend to talk for other women.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, has the surf industry changed much or has it really never changed at all? What do you think about it? - Just Brandon

Dibi: Once it became an “industry” it really has changed at all.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, how is Nathan being? He always being my fave surfer. Is he filming self-made movie again ? This Colors Taste like Music is best!… Please let me know! - Esteban Guevera

Dibi: Nathan’s great, I saw him the other day when he came by to take Greyson surfing. I’m not sure what he’s doing film-wise right now, but I’m sure he’ll surprise us all.

————————————————————————————–

Is there any way to watch those vids without paying for them? I don’t have a credit card. - Poor SOB

Dibi: I don’t think so. It’s a new technology we’ve been working with and it seems pretty cool.

————————————————————————————–

Herbie and Christian have one. Why don’t you and Nathan? Websites that is. Come on Dibi! ;) - Mike Garrity

Dibi: I enjoy working on theirs and feel there’s no need for me to have one also. Nathan likes his own space between himself and the rest of the world.

————————————————————————————–

Maybe you can help us. A pitcher of Redhook is on the line. My buddy says that Think Fast was a snowboarding company you guys branded. I say it was a company that was launched to form a new line for Nathan. Who’s in the right? Thanks Dibi! - Rick Jensen

Dibi: You’re right, we launched the line for Nathan who was really into snowboarding and MotoCross at the time.

————————————————————————————–

Does Christian have any old boards he’s willing to sell? Can you post it on Facebook if he is and what size boards he’s selling if he is! - SikBoy

Dibi: I’ll ask.

————————————————————————————–

Can you guys post up pics of Nathan from the 80s and 90s on the Astrodeck Facebook or the Astrodeck website? You guys do a good job with Christian’s site and all and I’m not dissing the Fletch man cause he rules! But it’d be pretty sweet to see some vintage Nathan stuff to. Judging from Christian’s Facebook comments I’m not the only one who wants to see some more Nathan to! So make it happen Dibi! :)   - Matt M.

Dibi: I’ll work on it.

————————————————————————————–

Makua Rothman rides for you guys but the guy’s a whining little puss. He has balls on riding those huge mackers but his overall style sucks. What do you guys see in him to have him as a team rider? - Kick Rocks Makua

Dibi: As you said he has balls!

————————————————————————————–

Hello Dibi. On a scale of 1 to 10, how would you rate your life in terms of success, happiness, experiences, etc.? - Nance

Dibi: It’s all over the place depending on the day. But, overall, I’m grateful for all the ups and downs, so I’ll give the experience a 10!

————————————————————————————–

I love this! I think HEY DIBI is so great! What a treat to read something from a professional surfer’s mom, and not just any professional surfer, but Christian Fletcher’s! Hehehe! Eat your heart out, Judy Slater! Thanks Dibi Fletcher! - FletcherFamFan

Dibi: Thanks, it fun being able to communicate with people. I think it helps get rid of the Addams Family sterotype.

————————————————————————————–

Ok Dibi. Confession time. When they were kids, did you make Christian and Nathan take music lessons or go to cathecism school, did they wear braces, get straight A’s, build jigsaw puzzles? Expose their nerd factor, I know there must be something! - Chris Johnston

Dibi: Guitar lessons, cello lessons, braces, reading, vision therapy, parochial school for a year…everything any parent who loves their kids would do.

————————————————————————————–

Do you know a number figure on how many tats Christian has exactly? And what is his favorite tat and where did he get it done? - Arnie P.

Dibi: Not a clue. He has cover ups, add-ons and everything else. I just asked him and he said the one on the back of his head, done by Craig Christy from RayGun Tattoo, and then redone by Natalia from Art Machine 66 who lives in Bali.

————————————————————————————–

That was a sick video of Christian bullriding. How long has he been riding? - Jon Wenton

Dibi: Not long, he had a lesson with one of the Leffew’s, so off he went.

————————————————————————————–

If Christian is gonna be city councilmen isn’t it only right that Herbie run for Prez? - Happy Red

Dibi: Now that would be great, something like Mr. Magoo!

————————————————————————————–

Dang youre purty Dibi. I can’t believe you have a son as old as Christian lol! - Nico S.

Dibi: Thank you, I can’t believe it either.

————————————————————————————–

Dibi do you know where I can get a copy of Chop Suey Club? Thank you. - Lauren McCoy

Dibi: No, I sure don’t, sorry.

————————————————————————————–

Is there a topic that is hands off to you and that you will not answer or acknowledge? - Quinn

Dibi: It hasn’t been asked yet so I don’t know.

Because You Asked. Another installment of “Hey Dibi”

Diamond Dibi Strikes Again

Diamond Dibi Strikes Again

Here’s another round of “HEY DIBI”. You guys have done a great job in asking questions and I have to say, Dibi’s done a kick-ass job in answering them. Gotta love her to-the-point, sincere answers. This is an ongoing popular series we have going on, so keep the questions coming, you inquisitive motherfuckers!

———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Are you a feminist?
- Solidad Gustavo
Dibi: I don’t know what that really means, but if you want to be specific I’ll give you my two cents.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
How come Nathan does not have Facebook? Or does he?
- Junichi Wada
Dibi: I would assume that he doesn’t want to, wouldn’t you? I think he calls it “Face Shot”.
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi!
Please refresh my memory as I might be incorrect, but didn’t you used to have your own clothing line? I believe a denim/jean line? And keep up the great work on here!
- Candace Carpenter
Dibi: Yes, I did in the early ’80s. It just became too difficult to juggle everything and I became insane about ballroom dancing.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi!
I read that you guys lived in Idaho for awhile. How was that for surf-crazy Herbie?
- Fletcher Fan Forever
Dibi: It was great, the mountian was unreal and had some of the best bump skiing in the world, but we’re beach people at heart and the ocean called.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
The Kyle Turley interview was off the hook! How did he hook up with you guys?
- Grim Weeper
Dibi: CF and Kyle met at a Slayer concert years ago, and they’ve stayed in touch. Kyle played in San Diego with Hank III, and on his way to LA for another gig, he was gracious enough to stop by the ‘DECK for an interview.
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi!
I have three little groms and they drive me crazy! I worry about what they’ll get into at 15, 16, and 18-years-old. LOL. Any advice on raising boys?
- Gretchen Mohler
Dibi: Hey Gretchen, I know this may sound trite and somewhat over used, but I’ve had lots of time to think about it, and boundaries are a great thing for all relationships. Perhaps the hardest thing to do - but the best long term investment in creating mutual respect.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you have an extra copy of that “Interview Magazine” you guys were featured in back in the day? Would love that! I’ll pay for it!
- Stacy Tahara
Dibi: No, I’m sorry, most magazines send like five copies, and I think after all this time I may have only one left.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
ASTRODECK IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you guys coming up with other product too? Like leashes and hats?
- AstroFan
Dibi: Right now, we’re focused on pads and sandals, and with everyone knocking us off I guess we’re on the right track, but thanks so much for the thumbs up!
———————————————————————————
What has been the best present you ever got from Christian?
- Janice Kerr
Dibi: Him being clean!!!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you still write for “Juice Magazine”? Big ups on that!
- BoonDoggie
Dibi: Thanks. In the upcoming issue, I’ve got interviews with Matt Archbold and Danny Fuller.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Did the boys ever particpate in sports like baseball, soccer, etc. You know, little league stuff?
- Brice Noel
Dibi: I think people think we’re like the Addam’s family or something. CF and NF participated in all sorts of sports and we loved it.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
You are a MILF!!! DO YOU KNOW THAT?!?????????
- WantsTheDib
Dibi: Well dude, I had to ask CF what that meant…WOW!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is the Fletcher ethnic background? Nathan said in an interview that he’s Cherokee. I’m just curious is all.
- Brandon R.
Dibi: I always laughed that I was a Heinz 57 - not ever thinking that NF would need a sense of belonging. My family heritage is quite interesting, as is everyone’s. I come from the last royal family in Germany and my ancestors discovered Georgia with a group pf convicts for the Queen. Herb’s mom was adopted at birth, and she was the offspring of a full Cherokee brave and a Swedish girl. Herb’s dad is part Blackfoot and his great-great-great grandmother was a sea captain.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is the dumbest question you ever been asked about yourself and about your family?
- SS Minnow
Dibi: The list is endless!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Okay, so give it up. Give us some dirt on Herbie. Was he a lady’s man and sweep you off your feet?
- SurfSkate949
Dibi: I ran away from home with him when I was 16, and we’ve been together ever since. I guess that says something about both of us!
———————————————————————————
Hello Dibi!
Love this whole idea of your interviews! Kyle Turley was fantastic with you! Congrats! Who can we expect for the next vid interviews?
- Roger Arieta
Dibi: I’ve got a couple interviews in the can, but didn’t want to put them up until they could be embedded on our website. Some I think, if I had to go through YouTube, would be pulled down, so I’ve waited until I can upload them directly. Who would you like to see?
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you ever think CF steps out of boundaries that he shouldn’t?
- JLK
Dibi: He’s an adult, and free to speak his mind, until I guess that right will be taken from us like so many others now are.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you ever indulge yourself? What do you like to treat yourself to?
- Nancy Klier
Dibi: It’s hard to say. Times have been pretty tough for quite a few years, but I ride my bike for miles every morning and it makes me feel glad to be alive…so maybe that’s the best treat of all!
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi,
I love reading about your and your family. I know the history of Astrodeck but what is the history of Hoffman Clothing?
- Macy Philiben
Dibi: It was never clothing, but fabric. Hoffman Fabrics. My Grandfather started it in 1925 and it has changed over the years into what it is today.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
You’re pretty. I like your picture by Mr. Weber. Do you like rugged Italian sailboarders? ;)
- Iliad Mauro
Dibi: Thank you. Bruce Weber makes everyone look great.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
You and Joyce [Hoffman] are sisters, ay? Nice looking gals! Heh. Does she still surf?
- Mr. Black
Dibi: Yes, my sister Joyce still surfs. Herb took some pictures of her the other day surfing in front of my folks house.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Have you guys ever had problems with stalkers and crazy fans?
- Breezie O’Quinn
Dibi: Some people are very bizarre, and cross the boundaries…but so far so good.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Love your advice, Dibi. What’s the best advice YOU ever got?
- Kris Garcia
Dibi: That all things pass!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
YOU GO GIRL! About time we heard from the best Fletcher! Long time admirer here and just love seeing you on board here and love seeing that Christian has made some kind of comeback and is being seen and heard! Do you like answering all of our stupid questions? Hehe.
- Jill Franklin
Dibi: I’m somewhat surprised that any one gives a shit about what I have to say.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Are you closer with Nathan or Christian?
- T.D.
Dibi: They’re so completely different that I have the luxury of pulling from different sides of myself to enjoy each of them to the fullest.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
I read that you don’t want to have anything to do with “John from Cincinnati”. Why not? It was a good show.
- Brett Byerly
Dibi: It’s gone so who cares?
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you like San Clemente? Your family is a fixture there, don’t you think? When you think San Clemente, the name “Fletcher” pops up in most heads as far as surfing goes.
- Hector Boreno
Dibi: I live and work in San Clemente and my families here, so what’s not to love?
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What do you think of all of Christian’s tattoos?
- Tatted Bruno
Dibi: I’m glad he’s not my daughter.
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi,
I’ve seen Nathan smoke. This isn’t good and makes me sad. Why does he smoke? It’s not good for surfers and the environment.
- Tiff Sauer
Dibi: Wow, why does he smoke? Why does anybody? I don’t, so I really can’t say.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is the best compliment you ever got? I bet you get lots!!!!!!!!
- Cici Wanau
Dibi: “You’re the best friend I could ever have!”
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is your honest opinion of all the other rip-off surf traction pads out there?
- Peter Sundberg
Dibi: No one’s ever made a better pad for a better price. The rest have all made an inferior pad for the same price. Shame on them!!!

Back With A Vengeance

Friday, April 9th, 2010

So all three of our sites were down for a little over a week. Yup. Www.astrodeck.com, www.herbiefletcher.com and www.christianfletchersurf.com. All down. Fucking tech hell. Eight days in a row. And that’s been a bummer because, like always, we’re always updating and putting up new content. I mean, fuck, I like to give my audience new stuff to brood over, you know? I don’t understand people who have their own websites and blogs and never do anything with them. Like they could care less about their fans and people who want to see recent stats on what they’ve been up to. What’s the purpose then of having one? I think when I’m on here, blogging and Facebooking, that I’m interacting with people from all over and we’re connecting in some way. Whether it’s me just saying thanks for the support, or telling some of you dumbfucks to go take a shit in a milk carton, at least we’re communicating, right?

But, anyway, we’re back. And back with a vengeance. All three sites are up and running. And there’s so much to do. I’m being serious when I say we have so many photos, interviews and other random things to post up here. I mean, I can post up new material every hour and things never get tired. It’s just now being able to find the time to do it all. But I’m stoked. I love the way things are going and the direction we’re taking things.

We’re also in the process of tweaking some things on here, changing the look a little, adding something called “The D-Side”. My mom’s Q&A series, “Hey Dibi” has been so successful and getting a lot of good reaction, so we thought we’d go off the richter scale and include a bunch of raw interviews she’s done (and will continue to do) with people from all walks of life. Talk a walk on the wild side. The D-Side. These characters are definitely not your typical, boring, bland cottage cheese of individuals. I mean, come on, we’re the Fletchers. Just because I’ve made my living as a professional surfer doesn’t mean that these are the only people I talk with or hang out with. No. In fact, I probably don’t hang out with surfers really at all. And I’m down to talk with anyone, learn interesting things from them, get their points of view, etc. and include all of this criss-crossing onto my site in one form or another. It makes things fun and shakes things up. And, fuck, you know I’m all about a good eyebrow raising.

We also recently hooked up with the guys at Casmiro. It’s still in its early stages but I hope to see things boom with that. Basically, what it is is, we’ve given them all our old footage from the movies we used to make at Fletcher Media. You know, films like the Wave Warriors anthology, Adrenaline Surf Series, Savage Beast, Tweak Freaks, Smut Peddler, etc. You get the idea. They take all our footage and splice them into 8-10 minute series and rent them out. Right now, we’ve got Part 1 of Savage Beast up and running. Then we’ll have Part 2 out, so forth and so on. You get to watch it for a few days for only $1.99 or 2 weeks for $2.99. And I think we’re working on a monthly membership plan. Check out the link here and catch the preview. Then join as a member. Yeah-yeah! Casmiro will be the only outlet for you guys to see all this vintage stuff. No where else. Unless you bought an old VHS copy 10 years ago.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/a/195488988687?v=feed&story_fbid=405510463687

And besides all this web stuff, my kid Greyson’s here with me. Working at Astrodeck, learning the ropes. He’s stoked and eager. In fact, he’s here right now working on designing a new sandal using 3D animation and graphics. Pretty sick. We also just grabbed a bunch of sponsors, but I’ll save that for another blog and give you the lowdown on that later.

So for those of you who have been wondering where the fuck I’ve been the past few days in cyber land, well there you go. There’s the latest update. There’s actually way more stuff to talk and report about, but you know what? I just don’t fucking feel like it right now. It’s 3:09 PM. Time for lunch. I’m thinking sandwich.

Oh, and one last thing. I’ll be having my wrestling debut this Saturday at the San Clemente Arena at 6 PM. Christian “Savage Beast” Fletcher. This little side gig has grown into something bigger and I’m always down to try something new. Couldn’t pass this gig up, so come and check it out. If I do well at this event and the next upcoming four events, I may be invited to join the professional wrestling federation. Sweet.

Surfer-turned-Wrestler Christian "Savage Beast" Fletcher

Herbie Takes Manhattan

Herbie Fletcher presented by Brucennial 2010: Miseducation

It’s probably a conservative assumption to say that you probably know a little somethin’ somethin’ about Herbie Fletcher.

Legendary surfer, superior waterman, raging jet skier, surf traction pad mogul, crafty shaper, Wave Warriors film magnate, husband to the fiercely creative and independent Dibi (Hoffman) Fletcher, father to flying alchemists Christian and Nathan Fletcher. Blah, blah, blah, the list goes on. And on and on. Seriously, if it involves innovation, water, and surf, it probably has Herbie’s scent on it. And it would take an extra two days to even slightly dwell on his past involvements with the wakeboarding world, the 1984 U.S. Olympic team, modeling with Versace, and his friendship with Julian Schnabel, Bruce Weber and Ingrid Sischy of Interview Magazine. Just to name a few of Herbie’s list of accomplishments and contacts, mind you. But, no. No, no, no. We’re not going to get into all of that.

Because whether you may have known a lot about all of this or only a little bit of some of this, what most of you probably didn’t acknowledge or realize is that Herbie Fletcher is also a talented and gifted artist. What started as a faint teenage hobby has grown into a gradual and passionate adult persuasion. (More about Herbie and Julian Schnabel and the Blind Girl Surf series artboards in another blog.)

Whether it’s on surfboards or on canvas - whatever type of medium and style - the ever-expressive Herbie splashes it. And let’s not kid ourselves, he always makes a big splash. So much so that now Herbie and his artwork will be featured at the Whitney Museum under the direction and presentation of Vito Schnabel (Julian’s son).

Brucennial 2010: Miseducation will have it’s gala opening on Thursday, February 25th. The event will premiere at 6 PM and is expected to last until 2 AM. Obviously, those New York art types know how to party until the wee hours of the morning. This first night is open to the public and will run until April 4th, 2010.

Herbie is one of a few select artists who will present his lauded pieces up for viewing and purchase. So if you’re in the New York area, take a go at it. And if you see Herbie, say “hi”. We hear it’s going to be snowing big-time while Herb’s in NY; we hope he puts on a little more than just a pair of Astrodeck sandals.

Below is the official press release. Have yourself a gander and then check it out in person.

PRESS RELEASE FOR BRUCENNIAL 2010: MISEDUCATION

I think the Brucennial is like—in the life of the people—it’s like an anniversary in the life of people. The people, they need moments to celebrate themselves and that’s what a Brucennial is. The Brucennial happens every two years, or really, you know, whenever we feel like it, and it’s a moment of celebration of the history of the people—of the reason why the people exist, of the nature of the people. Again, it’s like a person. If not there would be a flux of time without an interruption and I think that as people, people are live entities and they need to have some moments where they recognize this liveliness of their existence.

- Francesco Bonami

SoHo: The Bruce High Quality Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of The BRUCENNIAL 2010: Miseducation on February 25th at 6pm.

Since its founding, the BRUCENNIAL has evolved into The Bruce High Quality Foundation’s signature public program, as well as the most important survey of contemporary art in the world ever. Following the triumphant successes of BRUCENNIAL08: Doing it Again (Bushwick) and BRUCENNIAL09: Smithumenta (Carol Gardens), BRUCENNIAL2010: Miseducation brings together 420 artists from 911 countries working in 666 discrete disciplines to reclaim education as part of an artist’s ongoing practice beyond the principals of any one institution or experience.

The BRUCENNIAL will be housed at 350 West Broadway. Additionally, BHQFU projects will be on view at RECESS at 41 Grand Street.

The BRUCENNIAL is presented by The Bruce High Quality Foundation in collaboration with Vito Schnabel. 350 West Broadway is provided courtesy of Aby Rosen.

YOU ASKED. DIBI ANSWERED. READ ON.

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Steve Fuchs asks: What about your thoughts on training? Do you? If so, what’s your routine and diet?

Dibi: I’ve always been personally serious about training. My schedule now includes yoga, weight training and I ride a bike 150 miles a week. I eat really sparingly and I’m completely nuts!!!

Larry Jovial asks: What has been the best time of your life?

Dibi: It was really fun when Christian and Nathan were young and Herb was filming the Wave Warriors series. But I’ve got a lot to be grateful for and I try to laugh and enjoy myself everyday.

Cindy Quinonez asks: Hi Dibi. What is your daily regime?

Dibi: I believe I answered the question about my workout schedule above. After I ride my bike and stretch, I shower, have a protein smoothie, and head to the office, where it’s kind of anything goes! Whether I’m doing interviews, answering emails, or out in the warehouse shipping, it’s a job and I try to do my best. Sometimes kicking a few boxes help, but mostly it’s all good.

Cheryl Corrales asks: Hey Dibi, curious, do you have any daughters or other kids besides Christian and Nathan?

Dibi: No, I never had any other kids. I think Christian and Nathan were MORE then enough to teach me plenty.

Michael Finnegan asks: Are the Fletchers too off the beaten path? Do you do “normal” family things, like sit down to dinner, etc?

Dibi: Sure, I make dinner every night, and Herb and I sit together and sometimes now Christian joins us as well. We laugh and argue and enjoy the time together like all good friends.

Cassandra Doile asks: Long time fan of your artwork. Do you still do your surfboard art?

Dibi: Yes, I have a couple of really cool boards that I’m working on now, with stainless bases and 18 karat white gold rails. Very Jetsons!

Jean Pierre Pereat asks: Question everything that is told to you by the media! Shoot, what’s really going on out there in this world?! Too much crap that they’re trying to stuff down our minds. What do you think of it all?

Dibi: I think most of it is BULLSHIT!

Dana Finney asks: Loved the photo of your father! How is he doing? How is Flippy doing?

Dibi: My dad’s doing great, thanks. Flippy’s still in the hospital in Hawaii with pneumonia, and we’re hoping he’ll be better soon.

Lance Yamasaki asks: Were you and Herbie strict parents?

Dibi: No. I had never heard of boundaries, and I was a teen ager when I had CF, so I thought if we all just went to the beach everything would be great. I’ve had a long time to think about it now though, and honestly, I would do it all the same.

Scott Phillips asks: Hi Dibi, you are a cool mother! Do you enjoy motherhood?

Dibi: Yes, it taught me the best and the worst about myself and I’m sincerely grateful to have had the opportunity to be around such unique individuals.

Ted Howser asks: Was there really a Dana Point mafia with your father and Flippy and others?

Dibi: I think it was a term used to sell magazines by a writer trying to explain a group of guys, that while pursuing their own careers, had such great influence on future generations.

Jenn Capone asks: Hello Dibi Fletcher! Where has been your favorite place to travel?

Dibi: I think it was when Herb and I were able to go to Milan with [photographer] Bruce Weber for a retrospective of twenty-five years of his work with Conde Nast. It was so different then the world I live in… that trip is up there as one of the best.

Brian McGee: Can you adopt me? I am serious.

Dibi: Well, right now CF’s back living with us, I think that’s about the best I can do right now, but thanks for the pat on the back.

MOTHER KNOWS BEST

Friday, February 5th, 2010

I woke up with these things that look like peach-flavored Nerds Candy on my wang. What’s up with that?
- Gabe Harwell

Dibi: What’s up with not wearing a rubber???

———————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, you are great. What do you think is your biggest accomplishment so far?
- Tracy Shanahan

Dibi: Keeping my sense of humor!!!

———————————————————————————-

Dear Dibi, who was more naughty? Christian, Nathan or Herbie? ;)
- Barb Montgomery

Dibi: Christian, for sure!!!

———————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, love the sites. So question. I know you are an artist and someone with a strong creative background. Do you surf? And if you do, which medium do you prefer?
- Brice Aaron

Dibi: No, I don’t surf, my dad (Walter Hoffman) and sister (Joyce Hoffman) were Champions, you might know of them, so of course I tried it when I was young. But I never kept it up…boys and drugs occupied my time, you know. As far as art, whatever medium I’m working with at the time is what I like best. Writing, dancing, shaping artistic surfboards, sculpting rocks, etc. I’m very compulsive and do things to the max.

———————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, will you leave Herbie for me?!?
- Shawn Gregory

Dibi: How much money you got?!?

———————————————————————————–
Dear Dibi, what happened to the brands Think Fast and Standing Island? I always thought Standing Island featured such classy artwork.
- Sal Ortiz

Dibi: Thanks for that. It was too much work for just Herb and I. Silly us thought CF and Nathan were ready to help and work, so we made some decisions on what we could do without going broke and crazy. I still have the original art work from Standing Island that I run across occasionally. And it gives me a good laugh at how crazy Herb and I have been with all our ventures.

———————————————————————————–
Well this is a very cool idea to have your mom answering questions, Christian. But are there any off topics Dibi will never talk about?
- Steve Metal

Dibi: DUDE, I’m Christian’s mom, what do you think?!?

———————————————————————————–
This is great! Love hearing the input from CF’s mom! So I have a question for you then Mrs. Fletcher. Having raised surf stars yourself what advice do you have for parents who want their kids to be the next big thing, whether it’s in show biz or surfing?
- Devon Jameson

Dibi: Tell them to get a great education. They’ll spend a lot more time in their life working then doing either of the other things you mentioned.

———————————————————————————–
When Moses parted the Red Sea, did Christian and Nathan see?
- Gill Isaac Kaufman

Dibi: They were waiting for the tide to change.

———————————————————————————–
Hey Dibi, should I sell my ex-patriot life here in Hoi-an, (book store, house, motorbike, friends, etc., etc., etc.) and move to the Gili’s or just hang in and make the money? Of course selling the shit would make money as well.
- Randy Slocum

Dibi: Wow, tough question, honey. Friends, job, place to live, what’s the deal in the Gili’s? I need to know more before I throw my two cents in, and you know what that’s worth anyway!

———————————————————————————–
Dear Dibi, I loved your advice, ‘don’t buy, just rent’ on an earlier post. I’m a 48-year-old mother of two amazing children (19 & 22). I’ve done everything, including return to college, move 600 miles away to find my own identity, pursuing passions, etc…now that my kids have “grown up” and are hell bent on not needing me, I support and understand that. But no matter what I do, I’m still in love with them and can’t seem to get through a whole sentence without mentioning their names. Do you have any suggestions for how to pull out of the “empty nest” syndrome? (Thanks Christian for loaning us your madre.)
- Julie Buteyn

Dibi: Julie, I think you sound like you’re on the right track in establishing your own identity. That “Mom” you’re trying to distance yourself from took years of caring, worry and loving to develop. Give yourself some time and the relationship with the kids will mature into a friendship and that “Mom” will still be called on once in a while, she’s a part of you that you’ll always know of as your best. Sincerely, Dibi
