Dibi: Wow, sorry to hear your having a tough time. Every situation is so different, I’d hate to just throw out some trite suggestion not knowing anything about the circumstances. Being a Mom is the most difficult job, remember to stay calm and dispassionate even though you may want to kick something when dealing with inappropriate behavior. If you engage you’re just aggravating an already bad situation. You can cry in your room later if you want, or beat a punching bag, whatever, but be cool, I think that will really help.

Dibi: I think the system is completely broken. The war on drugs a complete bust. Take a look at Mexico. I’m afraid I’m not qualified to make a rash statement on how to fix it, as everything seems to come with huge unintended consequences and I really haven’t studied the situation in depth enough to give an educated answer.

Dibi: Hard to say. I don’t think that I can really separate any of the above as they all make me who I am. I love learning new things and I think that keeps me going and engaged in everything around me. I used to play subliminal tapes for CF when he was asleep that said “I love to study” - I don’t think they made much of an impression on him, but to this day when I pick up a book it’s like I can hear that in the background. Those tapes worked great on me!

Dibi: David Eggers in the NSSA. Evan Caples, Steve Ward, and Dino Andino in the PSAA. He had done ASP events, but after a few decided that he would enjoy surfing a lot more if he took another route.

I am a beginner surfer and I am enjoying it so far. My question is about traction pads. Why don’t surfers just put traction pad up and down all over the board? SUP people seem to have traction on their boards all over but not shortboarders. Thank you. – Kyle Konrad
Dibi: First, SUP guys stand on the board, they do not lay on it to paddle, so they don’t get rashed on the knees, nipples, etc. Second, shortboarding is about weight and traction all over would add enough to be noticeable. Back pad and front foot where the feet actually go is a perfect combo for plenty of grip.

Dibi: I don’t think it’s the surfers or skaters that consider themselves heroes. They have the same insecurities, and self doubt as all of the rest of us. It’s the media and constant need for content that drives it. I think people can do heroic things, but when put under the magnifying glass they’re still human and as such, I think anyone should be careful when picking someone to idolize.

Dibi: I think it has changed dramatically over the years for the better. Women now have a chance to really make it a career choice with good sponsorship, but it’s more difficult to market than men’s surfing, so, like most things, follow the money and the answer becomes a bit more clear.

Dibi: When I was young, guys couldn’t afford to surf as a profession, and now with the big sponsors they have a chance to travel the globe in search of waves, so I’d say the upside to those fortunate enough to get the chance has been incredible. The downside are the crowds that are now everywhere. But progress is always both sides of the coin.

Hi Dibi, do you think holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah mean anything anymore? Or is it all too commercial now? – Joan Schwartz
Dibi: I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have so many great family memories around Christmas. I think it’s a wonderful part of the evolution of being a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. It’s one of the few times a year that I get to experience all the above roles in a day and I’m grateful to pass on the traditions that have become a part of my family history. It’s also a great time to donate time and or money to charity as gifts for family and friends.

Hi there Dibi. I’ve read a lot about Herbie and Julian Schnabel being friends. Did they meet through through mutual friends in the art ciricle? – Wayne Turner
Dibi: Hey, Herb and Julian meet in Texas when they were both teenagers. Herb was there to compete in a surf contest and Julian lived there with his parents at the time. They didn’t see each other for many years and were reintroduced by a mutual friend.

Hey Dibi. My friends piss me off. A few of them are sponsored by surf companies that I would kill for. They don’t even care or appreciate what they get for free. I don’t think I would ever act this way. And they weren’t like this when we were way younger. I trip out how much they’ve changed! – Mike Paulsen
Dibi: That’s really sad, pretty soon perhaps they’ll have a tent at one of the “Occupy” spots, expecting another free hand out. In the words of Margaret Thatcher, “Socialism is a great idea until you run out of other peoples money.” I’m sure a lot of the companies are getting down that road about now and the faucet is starting to run dry, in many ways I think it will be great for your “sponsored” friends. It will help them become of much more value to themselves in the long run.

Who is your favorite Wave Warrior? Who is Herbie’s? Who is Christian’s? Who is Nathan’s? – Gregg Rausch
Dibi: For me, that’s like asking what’s my favorite color. I don’t have one, each is perfect at the right time and in the right conditions. I can’t answer for the guys, but I’m sure they feel much the same as I do.

Dibi: Yes, I do them as often as I can, and I’m fortunate to get to work with other international publications, so I have a chance to interview a broader range of people.

When are we going to see another surf trip with the likes of CF, Nathan, Herbie and maybe throw Greyson in there as well?! – Jordan Cruz
Dibi: They were just in Hawaii for a couple of weeks, so I’m not sure when they’ll be hitting the road again.

How old do you think a child is by the time he or she has already defining character and personality traits? – Paul Grossman
Dibi: When I first had kids I was so young I didn’t think much about it, in fact I didn’t think much at all, I kind of learned on the job I guess, but from my own experience I’ll tell you from the very beginning the boys were different. Individual in every way, from the pregnancy to adulthood, they were unique. I think we all see the world through our own eyes and there may be some family similarities but I think we all have our own path and our own way of seeing, feeling, and acting on it.

Sometimes I wonder how we all lived back in the 80s and 70s without cell phones and the internet! Do you think it was better then or now? – Tom Graven
Dibi: It was just different, I can’t say better or worse because it is what it is, and there’s no use living life in the rear view mirror. Innovation is happening so quickly I think it’s a pretty exciting time to be alive!

Hi Dibi, the holiday season always sucks for me. I basically celebrate Christmas but my paternal grandparents are Jewish. I wasn’t raised with the Jewish faith but I feel bad because I don’t want them to think that I am not interested in their religion and culture. – Josh Weiss
Dibi: I have a great curiosity about everything and if I was you I’d take the time to learn as much as I could from your grandparents, they’re part of you, and you owe it to yourself to pay attention before they’re not here to share their time with you.

Any new projects for you and Herbie for 2012? – Danny Marquez
Dibi: OMG, where do I start? I have nothing really planned with dates, but a list of a hundred things that I need to get done; from a new Wave Warriors, to putting a book together for it, and all the other things that make the show go. It seems that there are new things that jump on the list daily, I guess that’s why things are always interesting and challenging. Sometimes I feel like one of those circus performers that have the sticks with the spinning plates, it’s tough to keep them all going, but interesting as hell if I can do it.

Hey Dibi, wow! I am so excited about the upcoming Wave Warriors movie. Is this the 6th one? Since the last one came out, back in the 90s, what made you guys start production on WW VI now? – Gary Root
Dibi: Yes, contrary to what you might have read, it is the VI in the series. Number V we did with Warner Brothers and so there were so many more hoops and paperwork and all the other BS that working with a huge conglomerate entails. This one feels much more like 1-4; our own deal, and the timing just felt right.

Dibi: Yes, he surfs also, but he excels at skating.

So I’m gonna ask what you asked Bruce Irons. Who is your favorite historical figure? – Vance Padilla
Dibi: I admire so many people for so many different qualities that it’s hard to pick one. I just read the Steve Jobs book and I really admired his design ability, but certainly thought as a dad he pretty much SUCKED. I believe that it’s probably true in most circumstance. They’re great and admirable qualities in many, but a favorite with warts and all is hard for me to say.

Dibi: I’m sure they will make the cut and I can’t say for certain right now who else will be in it as it will depend a lot on the footage.

Dibi: She mostly rides wave on her SUP board now, but she still surfs if the waves age good. It’s just damn cold and pretty flat now.

I read where it was mentioned that you made Nathan wear a pink wetsuit when he was young so you could keep an eye out on him in the water. I thought that was such a fantastic idea so now I make my little ones wear a bright orange and blue suit as well. Thanks for the idea Dibi! – Hal Manson

Hey Dibi, question for you and Herbie both. What made this WW photo shoot different from the last one? – Jim Mackie
Dibi: I’m not sure what made it different for Herb, as I’ve stated before I do not like to speak for anyone else. What I thought was different? The last one was done 25 years ago, and it was amazing to think that it had such an impact that the best young surfers, who weren’t born at the time of the last shoot, felt honored to be part of the Wave Warrior Team, I think that says something pretty amazing.

Dibi: I’m not a Wave Warrior, as I do not surf, Greyson was skating , and my Dad was at work. I’m grateful that I get to write about the experience as I do feel I have a valid voice having been so involved, but the photo is about the “surfer”.

Why can’t I buy Astrodeck slippers anywhere on Maui yet?!?! I ordered a pair 4 months ago and they really are the BEST, most comfortable slippers EVER! & they are really durable too! They are still like new after wearing them everyday for 3 months(they don’t get smelly either)! I’ll rep them for free & get em in shops here just so I can buy more! Aloha! – Robby Webb
Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. Most of the outlets on Maui are pretty tied up with the big boys so it’s hard to compete. But I believe in patient perseverance and I feel our time is coming.
