There are stepping stones to all learning and I learned with time how to present the material better, which is the key to teaching. Dibi: Yes, I was a teen mom, and there were plenty of difficult times. I think that’s a part of life, and most people want to run away, believe me, there’s no place to run. You just create another set of problems. So relax and enjoy the process as best you can; it’s over quicker then you can imagine.

Hey there Dibi. What a great forum! Here’s my question; A few years ago I had seen a photo that I contribute to Bruce Weber. It was amazing and featured you dancing. Was this for a particular photo shoot with Bruce Weber? It was a bit grainy - even to the point of looking like a frame grab - but that may have been the speed of the camera shutter? I’m also familiar with the Fletcher Clan in Weber’s documentary, “Chop Suey Club” which I thoroughly enjoyed. Been a sideline observer of the Fletcher’s ever since. Dibi: I really got into ballroom dancing for quite awhile and went to many competitions. Rhinestones, feather dresses… what’s not to love? The particular photo you’re referring to was from the Fontainebleau in Miami. The event offers you the opportunity, for a cost, to buy videos of your different dances, which I did and let Bruce use some of it and also pull some grabs for stills. So, you’re perfectly correct.

Dibi, I know this isn’t really an advice column like Ann Landers but I sure would like your opinion on something. I try to please everyone and in the process, I always get hurt. I’m tired of it and now I’m thinking I’m going to start being a little more selfish. I’m very tired of getting hurt and putting in all my efforts to not get the same in return. Dibi: We all have choices and I’ve made plenty that have forced to think twice. As a middle kid, I’ve always been a pleaser. There’s been great pleasure in doing things for others and maybe the way to really get that pleasure is to do it with no expectations. Hey Dibi, sorry for the loss of Flippy. Speaking of Flippy, I’ve read about the history of him and Walter. Such rich history. I’m curious how they became known as the “Dana Point Mafia” and why they settled on raising their families in Orange County and not somewhere like Malibu. I ask this because I thought they were originally from Los Angeles and geographically thought maybe LA county beaches made more sense? - Ray Dillard
Dibi: Some writer gave them that name in print and it was used many times after, so it kind of stuck. They liked it down here because it wasn’t Malibu. It was very quiet with nothing going on but lots of great surf. They had always had a summer house in Laguna, so they just gravitated to the area when they bought their first homes and thought that living directly on the beach was worth the commute.

Note to readers: In case you’re wondering why there are so many grammatical errors as far as the content of some of these questions goes, that’s because I’ve left them as is. I haven’t edited or corrected the comments and questions people have been asking for “Hey Dibi”. Sometimes I get a kick out of the typos and terrible sentence structures. I mean, I know I’m not perfect in this area, either. There are probably a lot of errors you can find in this paragraph alone. But, man…someone once wrote me something and misspelled the word “ocean”. Seriously. They wrote “oshen”. So, anyway, instead of acting the part of the Spelling Gestapo here, I’m just gonna go with the flow and let you guys get a kick out of the type of stuff I get to read every day.

Dibi: The thing I find scary about the issue, is that one judge can override the votes of 7,000,000 people. Our constitutional right to have a say is no longer relevant?!? WOW! And, sure, you can put in requests…but that doesn’t mean I can always pull it off. But I’m interested.

Dibi: Herb was really lucky and got to spend so much time playing with the boys, while I took them to the orthodontist, school, had the parent-teacher conferences, the visits to the principle, you know the job. That’s just the way it was, and now we all work together, and it’s still the way it is and everyone seems to be stoked so I guess that’s the answer.
