Dibi: Hard to say. I don’t think that I can really separate any of the above as they all make me who I am. I love learning new things and I think that keeps me going and engaged in everything around me. I used to play subliminal tapes for CF when he was asleep that said “I love to study” - I don’t think they made much of an impression on him, but to this day when I pick up a book it’s like I can hear that in the background. Those tapes worked great on me!

Dibi: David Eggers in the NSSA. Evan Caples, Steve Ward, and Dino Andino in the PSAA. He had done ASP events, but after a few decided that he would enjoy surfing a lot more if he took another route.

There are stepping stones to all learning and I learned with time how to present the material better, which is the key to teaching. Dibi: What’s enough “coverage”? Kids used to surf because they loved it, now it’s about a sponsor. I think the whole thing has changed. And a lot of it? Not for the better.

(The most important men in Dibi’s life: Christian, Walter, Greyson, Herbie, and Nathan)
Let’s face it, I’ve put both of my parents through hell. But with everything that we’ve gone through, they’ve always had my back and dealt with things the best way they knew how. Without their love and support…who knows?
I’m really stoked now. Every day, I work with them at Astrodeck and we laugh, argue, and just deal with our day-to-day lives and the random people and situations that come with it. Right now is just a really great time for me. For all of us, I think. And having my kid Greyson with me is just icing on the cake.
But, anyway, I just wanted to take this time to thank my mom. Really fucking thank her. She is the glue in our family that binds us all together. She’s stronger than any of us. Despite the fact that she’s been called Walter Hoffman’s daughter or Herbie Fletcher’s wife or Christian and Nathan’s mom or Greyson’s grandma, she’s the one and only Dibi and her presence and heart are bigger than any of ours combined.
I love my mom and I’m also very lucky to have her as a friend. I hope the rest of you are fortunate enough to have that with your moms and acknowledge it.

Dibi: Christian wrote a technical description of a Judo air and posted a picture of Al Partanen to illustrate his text on Surfer’s FB page, as they had made such an obvious mistake in their description in the Tricktionary article. They deleted it and CF reposted it until they blocked him from being able to post anything. Herb went to their office on another issue and it spilled over. That’s when I really started finding out who I was. I love to learn, I’m really a perfectionist about my own skills and very demanding that I live up to the goals I’ve set for myself. I’m never bored, there won’t be enough time to master all the things I’d like to. I cook dinner every night and love to laugh.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Greyson much while he was growing-up, but he now lives with me so the relationship we have is ours to create, it’s not filled with a lot of memories that sometimes cloud the present. Dibi: I used to go tandem with my dad when all the surf contests had tandem events. I was a ballet dancer, so many of his friends wanted to partner with me. I competed with Don Hansen in the Makaha event a couple of times. I grew to hate it; I realized at a young age that I want control over events that concern me, and that wasn’t the case in tandem surfing. I met Herb at Makaha that first year, and there was never talk of us going tandem surfing.
