Hi Dibi, do you think holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah mean anything anymore? Or is it all too commercial now? – Joan Schwartz

Dibi: I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have so many great family memories around Christmas. I think it’s a wonderful part of the evolution of being a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. It’s one of the few times a year that I get to experience all the above roles in a day and I’m grateful to pass on the traditions that have become a part of my family history. It’s also a great time to donate time and or money to charity as gifts for family and friends.

Hi there Dibi. I’ve read a lot about Herbie and Julian Schnabel being friends. Did they meet through through mutual friends in the art ciricle? – Wayne Turner

Dibi: Hey, Herb and Julian meet in Texas when they were both teenagers. Herb was there to compete in a surf contest and Julian lived there with his parents at the time. They didn’t see each other for many years and were reintroduced by a mutual friend.

Dibi: For me, that’s like asking what’s my favorite color. I don’t have one, each is perfect at the right time and in the right conditions. I can’t answer for the guys, but I’m sure they feel much the same as I do.

Dibi: They were just in Hawaii for a couple of weeks, so I’m not sure when they’ll be hitting the road again.

How old do you think a child is by the time he or she has already defining character and personality traits? – Paul Grossman

Dibi: When I first had kids I was so young I didn’t think much about it, in fact I didn’t think much at all, I kind of learned on the job I guess, but from my own experience I’ll tell you from the very beginning the boys were different. Individual in every way, from the pregnancy to adulthood, they were unique. I think we all see the world through our own eyes and there may be some family similarities but I think we all have our own path and our own way of seeing, feeling, and acting on it.

Dibi: It was just different, I can’t say better or worse because it is what it is, and there’s no use living life in the rear view mirror. Innovation is happening so quickly I think it’s a pretty exciting time to be alive!

Any new projects for you and Herbie for 2012? – Danny Marquez

Dibi: OMG, where do I start? I have nothing really planned with dates, but a list of a hundred things that I need to get done; from a new Wave Warriors, to putting a book together for it, and all the other things that make the show go. It seems that there are new things that jump on the list daily, I guess that’s why things are always interesting and challenging. Sometimes I feel like one of those circus performers that have the sticks with the spinning plates, it’s tough to keep them all going, but interesting as hell if I can do it.

Hey Dibi, wow! I am so excited about the upcoming Wave Warriors movie. Is this the 6^th one? Since the last one came out, back in the 90s, what made you guys start production on WW VI now? – Gary Root

Dibi: Yes, contrary to what you might have read, it is the VI in the series. Number V we did with Warner Brothers and so there were so many more hoops and paperwork and all the other BS that working with a huge conglomerate entails. This one feels much more like 1-4; our own deal, and the timing just felt right.

Dibi: I admire so many people for so many different qualities that it’s hard to pick one. I just read the Steve Jobs book and I really admired his design ability, but certainly thought as a dad he pretty much SUCKED. I believe that it’s probably true in most circumstance. They’re great and admirable qualities in many, but a favorite with warts and all is hard for me to say.

Dibi: I’m not sure what made it different for Herb, as I’ve stated before I do not like to speak for anyone else. What I thought was different? The last one was done 25 years ago, and it was amazing to think that it had such an impact that the best young surfers, who weren’t born at the time of the last shoot, felt honored to be part of the Wave Warrior Team, I think that says something pretty amazing.

Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. Most of the outlets on Maui are pretty tied up with the big boys so it’s hard to compete. But I believe in patient perseverance and I feel our time is coming.

Hey Dibi. My brother has a $100,00 student loan and majored in European Folkore. My dad suggested he get a job working at Starbucks or In-N-Out (they have great benefits) but he doesn’t want to and says he wants to go protest at Wall Street. My mom wants to give him the money to fly out to New York. My dad and I are against it. What do you think of it all? - Paul Orozco

Dibi: I’m with your dad. I believe in hard work, and your brother better get used to it or I guess he’ll be like the 52% of the population living off all of us that go to work. What a shame.

I threw a birthday party for myself a few weeks ago and I have to say I’m really bummed out with the turn out. Only about 9 people showed up when over 30 told me they were coming. I spent so much money on food, drinks, etc. Now I’m just really pissed off and annoyed with all those who didn’t show up but said they would. Dibi, my friend has a 5-year-old son who is obsessed with musicals and Princess Jasmin from that Alladin Disney cartoon. She thinks it’s funny and cute when he wants to dress like a girl and wear a long wig and have make-up on. After reading about things in the news lately, I asked her if Robby (her son) ever wanted to join the Girl Scouts, would she allow him to? She said she wasn’t sure. I don’t think she should encourage this behavior. Am I wrong? -

Dibi: Wow, beyond my pay scale, but I’d sure look for someone professional to talk to make sure I was equipped to deal with what might be some difficult decisions.

Hey Dibi, this is a random question I guess. Maybe a dumb one too. I dunno. But I see a lot of surfers, pro surfers, wearing t-shirts while they’re out surfing instead of a rashguard. Why is that? I know it’s to protect themselves from the sun but wouldn’t a rashguard be better? I think shirts get so heavy and floppy in the water. - Erik Sundstrom

Dibi: CF used to wear a wife beater while in Fiji, but it was just to protect him so he could use a front foot pad that he never goes without.

My father passed about 5 years ago and now my mother is in her twilight. Her mind isn’t what it used to be. I would like to be with her and take care of her and have the capability to do so. My siblings think we should just put her in a nursing home. We grew up with the same mother but I just feel like they’re being so callous about this. I am heart-broken. - Phyllis McCullough

Dibi: It’s a really difficult decision that all of us have to face with aging parents. I think the best thing for you and the siblings is to get together and discuss the financial situation because that, unfortunately, will be the basis for how most of the choices will have to be made. I think about how I want it for me and figured I better work my ass off so I can have some quality choices, and have the control to make them before someone has to make them for me.

Dibi I’m stuck in the middle between two friends. My friend “Jenny” lent my other friend “Susan” $7.00 for lunch. Not that big of a deal, I guess. Hi Dibi, I have a problem and maybe you can help me. I’m 17 years old, a senior in high school, and plan to attend UC San Diego next Fall. I’ve received early admission. My problem is my dad. He eats, sleeps and breathes surfing. All my dad knows is surfing. In fact, he wanted me to apply to UC San Diego or Pepperdine just so he could visit me and the surf. He is stressing me to join the surf team at UC San Diego and though I like surfing it’s not my life the way it is his. He is so extreme about it that he’s told me that if I don’t join the UCSD surf team, that he won’t be paying for my tuition. I don’t get it. Does he expect me to be a pro surfer? Why is he forcing his obsession with surfing on me? I feel like he values surfing more than helping me with my education. - Mike Mariano

Dibi: Why not join the surf team if it gets the tuition paid? There’s no free lunch, and it seems to me a few hours surfing in the morning is a pretty easy way to get some help for the things you find most important.

Dibi: It’s one of the easiest things in the world to spend money that you didn’t make, a lot harder to spend what you worked hard to make. You could blow the 104K in no time at all or invest it and change your future forever. If you’re good enough to give the WQS a shot perhaps you might try to find a couple of sponsors and be willing to use a small amount of your own money so you have skin in the game and invest the rest to have something to fall back on.

I am adopted and have never had any interest in finding or knowing about my birth parents. 4 months ago, I was contacted by my birth mother. She seems like a nice enough woman and we’ve talked every few weeks or so but it’s not like we’re bosom buddies. She’s asked to see me and has even offered to fly me out to Florida, where she lives. A part of me wants to, a part me of doesn’t. I feel so conflicted and also have this odd feeling of “betrayal” to the loving parents who raised me. Any suggestions on how I should go about this? Dibi: I think it’s a question that all adopted children face, and it’s got to be an individual answer. My biological father was never around and I found out years later that I had other half siblings, I met one, but there didn’t seem to be some long lost connection so it faded away as we went on our own life’s path. My life is what I make it and I really spend little time looking in the rear view mirror about what it should or could have been. The responsibility to be happy is our own. I don’t know if that helped, but you’ll have to do what’s ultimately best for yourself and accept the responsibility of that choice.

Dibi: The hypocricy is rampant, from the millionaire Michael Moore supporting OWS to the global warming fanatic Al Gore and his private jets, Nancy Pelosi getting in on the VISA IPO while the House was writing the regulations, the list goes on. The saddest thing is that your friend is just a small-time hypocrite compared to the real winners of the BS game.

I know it sounds shallow and she has so many other great qualities about her but physically it’s just such a turn off for me. Dibi: Everyone has their own way of coping and dealing, that’s what makes relationships a mine field. I find it much easier to deal with open aggressiveness; passive aggression really blows my mind but it’s all a part of the drama.

I was watching that reality show, “19 Kids & Counting” and it’s about that crazy family, the Duggars. They have 19 kids, born and raised by the married couple of that show. Apparently, the dad made a killing with investments and rental properties so they seem self-sufficient and aren’t on any government assisted programs. But still, something seems wrong, to me anyhow, about having 19 kids even if you have the means to provide for all of them. What do you think Dibi? - Jim Curry

Stecyk.

Dibi: When I was growing-up, there was a real difference. But now the line is definitely blurring with the big contest money, agents, managers, trainers, corporate sponsorship by publicly traded companies, etc. And that will be a factor that will forever change surfing. Dibi: It was a Volvo commercial that we did with Bruce Weber. Bruce sold Volvo on the idea of how cool it would be to have this wild surf family represent the “All American family” car. They loved it - until they wanted to start changing everything. It was fun at the time; I love working with Bruce, but I never had a copy of the finished product.

Dibi: Christian wrote a technical description of a Judo air and posted a picture of Al Partanen to illustrate his text on Surfer’s FB page, as they had made such an obvious mistake in their description in the Tricktionary article. They deleted it and CF reposted it until they blocked him from being able to post anything. Herb went to their office on another issue and it spilled over. They finally admitted by phone that because he’s not sponsored his comments are not relevant. Pretty interesting, don’t you think??

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Greyson much while he was growing-up, but he now lives with me so the relationship we have is ours to create, it’s not filled with a lot of memories that sometimes cloud the present. Hey there Dibi. What a great forum! Here’s my question; A few years ago I had seen a photo that I contribute to Bruce Weber. It was amazing and featured you dancing. Was this for a particular photo shoot with Bruce Weber? It was a bit grainy - even to the point of looking like a frame grab - but that may have been the speed of the camera shutter? I’m also familiar with the Fletcher Clan in Weber’s documentary, “Chop Suey Club” which I thoroughly enjoyed. Been a sideline observer of the Fletcher’s ever since. Dibi: I really got into ballroom dancing for quite awhile and went to many competitions. Rhinestones, feather dresses… what’s not to love? The particular photo you’re referring to was from the Fontainebleau in Miami. The event offers you the opportunity, for a cost, to buy videos of your different dances, which I did and let Bruce use some of it and also pull some grabs for stills. So, you’re perfectly correct.

Dibi: No, and I really wish I did. I rented a piano for awhile and took lessons, but, sadly, just didn’t have the time to practice. Took singing lessons, switched to opera which I loved, but again, just couldn’t commit the time to it with all the other work I have to do to keep the ball rolling.

Hey Dibi, sorry for the loss of Flippy. Speaking of Flippy, I’ve read about the history of him and Walter. Such rich history. I’m curious how they became known as the “Dana Point Mafia” and why they settled on raising their families in Orange County and not somewhere like Malibu. I ask this because I thought they were originally from Los Angeles and geographically thought maybe LA county beaches made more sense? - Ray Dillard

Dibi: Some writer gave them that name in print and it was used many times after, so it kind of stuck. They liked it down here because it wasn’t Malibu. It was very quiet with nothing going on but lots of great surf. They had always had a summer house in Laguna, so they just gravitated to the area when they bought their first homes and thought that living directly on the beach was worth the commute.

Dibi: When I sit and try to conjure up highs and lows, it seems a bit difficult as there are degrees of both. Everyone’s healthy, which is the best. I know that sounds trite but looking back over the years of huge dramatic injuries, addictions and all the other hardships families go through, perhaps something we seem to take for granted is the greatest highlight. I try not to dwell on the lows and there were a few that were very difficult, but with the passing of time, they seem to fall into the makeup of who we are… part of the life process. I hope I can live up to my expectations and that’s the best I can do for this year and all the ones I’ll be lucky enough to experience.

Dibi: I try never to take things for granted, and I’m surprised every time I answer questions that people care what I think. I’m not sure if “flattered” would be the word I’d choose; I think grateful seems to be a better fit for how I feel. Bruce is a great surfer and so is Nathan, so I see no problem in looking up to both of their surfing talents. They’re great friends to each other, and inspire one another, how cool for both of them.

Hi Dibi I have a request please. In Surfer Magazine there was a great interview with Nathan, something about Coming out of the Shadows. In that article, there was a wonderful photo of Nathan holding his board and standing beside, what I realized since your last Hey Dibi piece, as one of your own sculptures of the mannequins. I’ve since lost that magazine and have been trying to replace it. Would it be possible if you reposted that photo. It is my favorite of Nathan of all time.
