An Old School Fletcher Family Christmas

An Old School Fletcher Family Christmas

You asked, Dibi answered.

Here’s another round of “Hey Dibi” for your reading pleasure.

————————————————————————————-

Hi Dibi, do you think holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah mean anything anymore? Or is it all too commercial now? – Joan Schwartz

Dibi: I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have so many great family memories around Christmas. I think it’s a wonderful part of the evolution of being a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. It’s one of the few times a year that I get to experience all the above roles in a day and I’m grateful to pass on the traditions that have become a part of my family history. It’s also a great time to donate time and or money to charity as gifts for family and friends.
 ————————————————————————————
Hi there Dibi. I’ve read a lot about Herbie and Julian Schnabel being friends. Did they meet through through mutual friends in the art ciricle? – Wayne Turner
Dibi: Hey, Herb and Julian meet in Texas when they were both teenagers. Herb was there to compete in a surf contest and Julian lived there with his parents at the time. They didn’t see each other for many years and were reintroduced by a mutual friend.
 ————————————————————————————
Ok so if you got to cast the Fletcher movie, who would play you, who would play Herbie, and who would play Christian, Nathan, Greyson, Walter and Joyce? – Stephanie Neal
Dibi: I think the only ones I can think of to play us, would be us, we’re all unique and more complex then some one would be, pretending to be us
————————————————————————————
Do you think that there are certain individuals who were truly born evil? – Josh Killman
Dibi: YES!! I believe history proves that your question is correct.
 ————————————————————————————
Hey Dibi. My friends piss me off. A few of them are sponsored by surf companies that I would kill for. They don’t even care or appreciate what they get for free. I don’t think I would ever act this way. And they weren’t like this when we were way younger. I trip out how much they’ve changed! – Mike Paulsen
Dibi: That’s really sad, pretty soon perhaps they’ll have a tent at one of the “Occupy” spots, expecting another free hand out. In the words of Margaret Thatcher, “Socialism is a great idea until you run out of other peoples money.” I’m sure a lot of the companies are getting down that road about now and the faucet is starting to run dry, in many ways I think it will be great for your “sponsored” friends. It will help them become of much more value to themselves in the long run.
————————————————————————————Hey Dibi, I love the Wave Warriors photo shoot. But why weren’t you in it? – Linda Musser
Dibi: As usual, I was at the office working. Someone has to do everything while the guys are on the beach. I did get to write about it, and I was stoked to have the opportunity.
————————————————————————————
I dig your pads! The colored and designed ones are so sick!!!! With your artistic background are you the one who designs them Dib or Herb or you both? – Brent Karsson
Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. We all take great pride in the quality of the pads we put out and we all have a hand in the design process.
————————————————————————————
Hello Dibi. What do you think is right with this world? What’s wrong with this world? – Scott Foreman
Dibi: I think people are what’s right, and people are what’s wrong.
————————————————————————————
Who is your favorite Wave Warrior? Who is Herbie’s? Who is Christian’s? Who is Nathan’s? – Gregg Rausch
Dibi: For me, that’s like asking what’s my favorite color. I don’t have one, each is perfect at the right time and in the right conditions. I can’t answer for the guys, but I’m sure they feel much the same as I do.
————————————————————————————
Hi Dibi are you going to be doing any more interviews for Dside and Juice? – Elaine Wheaton
Dibi: Yes, I do them as often as I can, and I’m fortunate to get to work with other international publications, so I have a chance to interview a broader range of people.
————————————————————————————
When are we going to see another surf trip with the likes of CF, Nathan,  Herbie and maybe throw Greyson in there as well?! – Jordan Cruz
Dibi: They were just in Hawaii for a couple of weeks, so I’m not sure when they’ll be hitting the road again.
————————————————————————————
How old do you think a child is by the time he or she has already defining character and personality traits? – Paul Grossman
Dibi: When I first had kids I was so young I didn’t think much about it, in fact I didn’t think much at all, I kind of learned on the job I guess, but from my own experience I’ll tell you  from the very beginning the boys were different. Individual in every way, from the pregnancy to adulthood, they were unique. I think we all see the world through our own eyes and there may be some family similarities but I think we all have our own path and our own way of seeing, feeling, and acting on it.
————————————————————————————
Sometimes I wonder how we all lived back in the 80s and 70s without cell phones and the internet! Do you think it was better then or now? – Tom Graven
Dibi: It was just different, I can’t say better or worse because it is what it is, and there’s no use living life in the rear view mirror. Innovation is happening so quickly I think it’s a pretty exciting time to be alive!
————————————————————————————
Hi Dibi, the holiday season always sucks for me. I basically celebrate Christmas but my paternal grandparents are Jewish. I wasn’t raised with the Jewish faith but I feel bad because I don’t want them to think that I am not interested in their religion and culture. – Josh Weiss
Dibi: I have a great curiosity about everything and if I was you I’d take the time to learn as much as I could from your grandparents, they’re part of you, and you owe it to yourself to pay attention before they’re not here to share their time with you.
————————————————————————————
Any new projects for you and Herbie for 2012? – Danny Marquez
Dibi: OMG, where do I start? I have nothing really planned with dates, but a list of a hundred things that I need to get done; from a new Wave Warriors, to putting a book together for it, and all the other things that make the show go. It seems that there are new things that jump on the list daily, I guess that’s why things are always interesting and challenging. Sometimes I feel like one of those circus performers that have the sticks with the spinning plates, it’s tough to keep them all going, but interesting as hell if I can do it.
————————————————————————————
Hey Dibi, wow! I am so excited about the upcoming Wave Warriors movie. Is this the 6th one? Since the last one came out, back in the 90s, what made you guys start production on WW VI now? – Gary Root
Dibi: Yes, contrary to what you might have read, it is the VI in the series. Number V we did with Warner Brothers and so there were so many more hoops and paperwork and all the other BS that working with a huge conglomerate entails. This one feels much more like 1-4; our own deal, and the timing just felt right.
————————————————————————————
Greyson is such an amazing skater. No doubt lineage has a lot to do with it! Does Greyson surf too? – Phil Jebsen
Dibi: Yes, he surfs also, but he excels at skating.
————————————————————————————
So I’m gonna ask what you asked Bruce Irons. Who is your favorite historical figure? – Vance Padilla
Dibi: I admire so many people for so many different qualities that it’s hard to pick one. I just read the Steve Jobs book and I really admired his design ability, but certainly thought as a dad he pretty much SUCKED. I believe that it’s probably true in most circumstance. They’re great and admirable qualities in many, but a favorite with warts and all is hard for me to say.
————————————————————————————
Dibi seeing how Christian was THE big movement for aerial surfing and seeing now how Nathan has blown up at Chopes, did you ever think that these groms surfing Poche would grow up to be such legends? – Bill Currier
Dibi: I had no idea that my life would be anything like it is in all honesty.
————————————————————————————
Hi Dibi. So who are the new Wave Warriors? From the recent photo shoot, looks like there were a lot of new faces mixed with some of the OG people. Are you guys going to have a special segment on Andy Irons and Marvin Foster? – Timothy O’Shea
Dibi: I’m sure they will make the cut and I can’t say for certain right now who else will be in it as it will depend a lot on the footage.
————————————————————————————
Does is scare you to see Nathan riding HUGE waves? You have a very talented family. – Scott Johns
Dibi: Yes and no. He’s trained and loves it, I’m grateful that he gets to do something he has a passion for.
————————————————————————————
Hey Dibi do you know someone or have a “friend” who only calls or contacts you when they need something? I haven’t heard from this guy in over 3 years and he suddenly Facebook messages me, asking me for a favor. What a kook! – Freddie Ackerman
Dibi: You would not believe all the people that call, e-mail, and message  asking for pads!
————————————————————————————
Does Joyce still surf? – Bobby Gray
Dibi: She mostly rides wave on her SUP board now, but she still surfs if the waves age good. It’s just damn cold and pretty flat now.
————————————————————————————
I read where it was mentioned that you made Nathan wear a pink wetsuit when he was young so you could keep an eye out on him in the water. I thought that was such a fantastic idea so now I make my little ones wear a bright orange and blue suit as well. Thanks for the idea Dibi! – Hal Manson
Dibi: I’m glad I can be of help. I could spot Nathan anywhere in his pink wetsuit!
————————————————————————————
Hey Dibi, question for you and Herbie both. What made this WW photo shoot different from the last one? – Jim Mackie
Dibi: I’m not sure what made it different for Herb, as I’ve stated before I do not like to speak for anyone else. What I thought was different? The last one was done 25 years ago, and it was amazing to think that it had such an impact that the best young surfers, who weren’t born at the time of the last shoot, felt honored to be part of the Wave Warrior Team, I think that says something pretty amazing.
————————————————————————————
What did u think of Christian’s unique style (hair,  clothing etc) – Trey Walley
Dibi: I think it’s great that he’s always had his own style. Sometimes it’s a bit outlandish, but certainly never dull or boring.
————————————————————————————
What was Christian like as a 2yr old? – Christine Crispell
Dibi: Fantastically FUN!!
————————————————————————————
Dibi one, no THREE complaints about the Wave Warriors photo !!! 1. Where were YOU? Where was Greyson? And where was Walter Hoffman??? – Janice Halpert
Dibi: I’m not a Wave Warrior, as I do not surf, Greyson was skating , and my Dad was at work. I’m grateful that I get to write about the experience as I do feel I have a valid voice having been so involved, but the photo is about the “surfer”.
————————————————————————————
Hey Dibi, will you have a New year’s resolution? – Craig Morton
Dibi: No, I’ve never made one yet, so I don’t expect to make one this year either. I think the pressure of a one day deal is a bit overrated.
————————————————————————————
Dibi what is the nicest thing a fan has ever said or done for you? – Shannon Gibbs
Dibi: That’s so funny, I had no idea I had fans. Shocking idea. A stranger opened the door for me the other day, and I thought it was so nice. I think most people have forgotten how to be polite and it seems a bit odd as manners are free.
————————————————————————————
Hi Dibi. Did you roughhouse with the boys a lot growing up? – Jon P. Billings
Dibi: Herb roughhoused with them. I took them to the beach and played with them in that way.
————————————————————————————
Why can’t I buy Astrodeck slippers anywhere on Maui yet?!?! I ordered a pair 4 months ago and they really are the BEST, most comfortable slippers EVER! & they are really durable too! They are still like new after wearing them everyday for 3 months(they don’t get smelly either)! I’ll rep them for free & get em in shops here just so I can buy more! Aloha! – Robby Webb
Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. Most of the outlets on Maui are pretty tied up with the big boys so it’s hard to compete. But I believe in patient perseverance and I feel our time is coming.

"What can I say? Sometimes you just gotta let 'em take control!" Dibi Fletcher putting all trust in the hands of Julian Schnabel
(Photo: “What can I say? Sometimes you just gotta let ‘em take control!” Dibi Fletcher putting all trust in the hands of Julian Schnabel.)
Hey Dibi. My brother has a $100,00 student loan and majored in European Folkore. My dad suggested he get a job working at Starbucks or In-N-Out (they have great benefits) but he doesn’t want to and says he wants to go protest at Wall Street. My mom wants to give him the money to fly out to New York. My dad and I are against it. What do you think of it all? - Paul Orozco
Dibi: I’m with your dad. I believe in hard work, and your brother better get used to it or I guess he’ll be like the 52% of the population living off all of us that go to work. What a shame.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
I threw a birthday party for myself a few weeks ago and I have to say I’m really bummed out with the turn out. Only about 9 people showed up when over 30 told me they were coming. I spent so much money on food, drinks, etc. Now I’m just really pissed off and annoyed with all those who didn’t show up but said they would. Am I just being a big baby about all of this? - Evan Mathers
Dibi: Bummer, but interesting lesson. Next year, meet at a restaurant where everyone that shows can chip in. It will seriously keep down the overhead.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi, how are you? Anyway, maybe you can give me some advice. My friend Mike really likes this chick named Karen, who I’m really good friends with. He keeps asking me to hook it up with him. Karen told me she has no interest in him whatsoever. I told him that she wasn’t interested in being in a relationship or as he liked to put it “hook up”. He won’t take no for an answer and keeps pestering me about it. What can I say to get this kook to stop hassling me about her? - Dan “Tweet” Bachmann
Dibi: Give him her number, it sounds like she’ll set him straight.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Dibi, my friend has a 5-year-old son who is obsessed with musicals and Princess Jasmin from that Alladin Disney cartoon. She thinks it’s funny and cute when he wants to dress like a girl and wear a long wig and have make-up on. After reading about things in the news lately, I asked her if Robby (her son) ever wanted to join the Girl Scouts, would she allow him to? She said she wasn’t sure. I don’t think she should encourage this behavior. Am I wrong? -
Dibi: Wow, beyond my pay scale, but I’d sure look for someone professional to talk to make sure I was equipped to deal with what might be some difficult decisions.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, this is a random question I guess. Maybe a dumb one too. I dunno. But I see a lot of surfers, pro surfers, wearing t-shirts while they’re out surfing instead of a rashguard. Why is that? I know it’s to protect themselves from the sun but wouldn’t a rashguard be better? I think shirts get so heavy and floppy in the water. - Erik Sundstrom
Dibi: CF used to wear a wife beater while in Fiji, but it was just to protect him so he could use a front foot pad that he never goes without.
 —————————————————————————————————————————————-
My father passed about 5 years ago and now my mother is in her twilight. Her mind isn’t what it used to be. I would like to be with her and take care of her and have the capability to do so. My siblings think we should just put her in a nursing home. We grew up with the same mother but I just feel like they’re being so callous about this. I am heart-broken. - Phyllis McCullough
Dibi: It’s a really difficult decision that all of us have to face with aging parents. I think the best thing  for you and the siblings is to get together and discuss the financial situation because that, unfortunately, will be the basis for how most of the choices will have to be made. I think about how I want it for me and figured I better work my ass off so I can have some quality choices, and have the control to make them before someone has to make them for me.
 —————————————————————————————————————————————-
Dibi I’m stuck in the middle between two friends. My friend “Jenny” lent my other friend “Susan” $7.00 for lunch. Not that big of a deal, I guess. But Jenny constantly brings up with me how Susan has not paid her back that $7.00. I said, why don’t you bring it up to her? And she says she doesn’t want to look stingy about it but that it annoys her that Susan has made no attempts to buy her lunch or pay her back. Should I drop hints towards Susan about the money she owes Jenny or just stay out of it? - Tracy Liu
Dibi: Stay out of it, not your problem! Money makes many issues completely insane.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
There’s a guy at my work who wears too much fucking cologne. I swear, you can still smell it in the elevator. I asked him if he could ease up on it and you know what the motherfucker did?? He actually started splashing MORE of it not only on himself but in his cubicle, on the plants, etc. What the fuck dibi????? - Luke Gervase
Dibi: HAHA, that’s very funny. I’m at a loss, most of the guys I know don’t really wear cologne and if you already asked him to knock it off, the only thing I can suggest is figuring out how you can move as far away from him as possible.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi! I have a friend who also works in the same office that I do. During our social gatherings on weekends, he is a different person than he is in the office. He’s really fun and out-going but at work, he’s actually rather cold and distant and I find that odd. Or is he just being a good professional by acting this way towards me in the work environment? - Douglas Walther
Dibi: My work environment is very casual, which I really enjoy, but there’s so much regulation in most businesses it’s sad - but probably better for keeping your job in the long run.
 —————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi, I have a problem and maybe you can help me. I’m 17 years old, a senior in high school, and plan to attend UC San Diego next Fall. I’ve received early admission. My problem is my dad. He eats, sleeps and breathes surfing. All my dad knows is surfing. In fact, he wanted me to apply to UC San Diego or Pepperdine just so he could visit me and the surf. He is stressing me to join the surf team at UC San Diego and though I like surfing it’s not my life the way it is his. He is so extreme about it that he’s told me that if I don’t join the UCSD surf team, that he won’t be paying for my tuition. I don’t get it. Does he expect me to be a pro surfer? Why is he forcing his obsession with surfing on me? I feel like he values surfing more than helping me with my education. - Mike Mariano
Dibi: Why not join the surf team if it gets the tuition paid? There’s no free lunch, and it seems to me a few hours surfing in the morning is a pretty easy way to get some help for the things you find most important.

—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, I have a cousin who just got out of prison. He’s been in the system all of his adult life. My aunt bends over backwards to work hard and take care of things. I just want to beat his head in the way he treats her when he’s out. Like she’s his slave, cooking for him, giving him money to go mess things up again. I’ve even told her she needs to be more tougher with him but I think she’s actually intimidated of him. It’s not like she can kick him out, he won’t leave, and it’s not like she’ll ever call the law on his sorry ass. I feel helpless in watching all this go down. He’ll be the end of her! - Terry Govern

Dibi: Too bad for them both. They’re in the dance of dependency and it’s really sad, but both being adults, unless they get help they’ll spiral through it to one of it’s inevitable conclusions.
 —————————————————————————————————————————————-
Do you think it’s wrong that I pressure my friend to stop rollerblading? I just think it’s so lame and don’t like other people calling him a fag. He doesn’t seem to care. Why does it seem to bother me more than it does him? - Justin Roy
Dibi: If he’s enjoying himself, why do you care what anyone calls him??
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
People say that real loyalty is when you stick by your friends no matter what. So would you think I were an asshole if I bailed on my friend who tried to stab someone? I can’t get involved with that kind of shit! It’s too gnarly! - Craig Jasper
Dibi: What do people say stupid is??
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi I just have a quick question and thought I could get your insight. I’m not sponsored by any company but due to an inheritance, I’ve received $104,000. Could this last me to try and give the WQS a shot? And if so, how long do you think I could travel and pay for my comp fees? Thanks!
Dibi: It’s one of the easiest things in the world to spend money that you didn’t make, a lot harder to spend what you worked hard to make. You could blow the 104K in no time at all or invest it and change your future forever. If you’re good enough to give the WQS a shot perhaps you might try to find a couple of sponsors and be willing to use a small amount of your own money so you have skin in the game and invest the rest to have something to fall back on.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hey dibi do you think things like Twitter and Facebook just encourage people to talk more shit and say things they wouldn’t normally say to a person’s face? I can’t believe some of the shit I read on those things! People don’t seem to care about privacy anymore! - Steve Reyes
Dibi: Yes, everyone seems to want to be emotionally naked in public. Some of it is pretty disturbing.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Maybe I should ask you this, since you are the mom of CF! I am thinking of getting tattoos. But I hear people get addicted and can’t stop getting them. I don’t want to end up looking like an atlas map but knowing my personality I probably won’t stop after getting just one. So should I even bother? - Marc Voltaire
Dibi: I think they can certainly make life more difficult, and mine has been hard enough… I can’t imagine tattoos would have made it better. On the other hand, I think CF is perfectly happy with his. So I guess you’ve got two sides to the answer.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi. I’ve been married for 3 years to “Bob”. Recently, he told me that into our first year of marriage, he cheated on me with a random girl he met a friend’s bachelor party. He’s begged me for forgiveness and has said it’s never happened again. I believe him…however, it hurts still and I also wonder why he felt the need to tell me this after all this time? Was it eating at him? Is he testing me for a reaction? - Janet Reschlaum
Dibi: Interesting that he felt the need to dump the information on you so he no longer had to carry it alone. It’s nice that you’re able to forgive him, I don’t think I’d be quite so generous.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
I work drive-thru at Taco Bell and I hate it when my friends roll up because they always expect me to give them free food. It stresses me out. I’ve told them to cool it but they think it’s hilarious to come and demand freebies.  Why do people always expect free stuff for nuthin! - Gus Fernandez
Dibi: I really don’t know. There isn’t one day that goes by that someone or two doesn’t call and expect free pads - it’s not like they’re free to me, and I always wonder why they have an expectation that they should be free to them, but I guess that’s the whole premise behind OWS.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
I am adopted and have never had any interest in finding or knowing about my birth parents. 4 months ago, I was contacted by my birth mother. She seems like a nice enough woman and we’ve talked every few weeks or so but it’s not like we’re bosom buddies. She’s asked to see me and has even offered to fly me out to Florida, where she lives. A part of me wants to, a part me of doesn’t. I feel so conflicted and also have this odd feeling of “betrayal” to the loving parents who raised me. Any suggestions on how I should go about this? Thanks, Dibi. - Devon Hoskins
Dibi: I think it’s a question that all adopted children face, and it’s got to be an individual answer. My biological father was never around and I found out years later that I had other half siblings, I met one, but there didn’t seem to be some long lost connection so it faded away as we went on our own life’s path. My life is what I make it and I really spend little time looking in the rear view mirror about what it should or could have been. The responsibility to be happy is our own. I don’t know if that helped, but you’ll have to do what’s ultimately best for yourself and accept the responsibility of that choice.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
I’m so sick of hypocrites Dibi! This guy was preaching to me about how it’s so great to be a vegan and to hug trees and blah fucking blah. Then I pointed out to him that his sneakers were made from suede and his watch strap was made from leather. He had a big “OOPS!” moment there, didn’t he? HA HA HA!
Dibi: The hypocricy is rampant, from the millionaire Michael Moore supporting OWS to the global warming fanatic Al Gore and his private jets, Nancy Pelosi getting in on the VISA IPO while the House was writing the regulations, the list goes on. The saddest thing is that your friend is just a small-time hypocrite compared to the real winners of the BS game.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hello Dibi! What a hoot! I’d like to know what is your first memory of money? Having it or spending it? - Kate Fowler
Dibi: We really had nothing when I was young, but I remember being really happy. I think the best was when we used to collect bottles and save the change to buy Popsicle’s for all the kids at the beach on Balboa Island where I lived.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
My girlfriend chopped her hair off and dyed it jet black and got snakebite piercings. She looks way too Goth and EMO now and frankly I just don’t like this new “style” of hers. I know it sounds shallow and she has so many other great qualities about her but physically it’s just such a turn off for me. But I feel like part of a relationship is that mutual physical attraction and so don’t I have the right to feel this way? - Brady Cullings
Dibi: I think it’s time to start looking around. She is.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
Hi there Dibi. I’m usually pretty shy and quiet. That doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion on things but I guess I just don’t speak up when I should. I don’t know. I hate confrontation and drama. On the other hand my sister is very brash and loud to the point of obnoxiousness and embarrassment. Is one better th an the other? Am I being a pushover if I don’t say what I feel or is it best to just avoid problems and hurt feelings by staying quiet? - Laurie Ketthler
Dibi: Everyone has their own way of coping and dealing, that’s what makes relationships a mine field. I find it much easier to deal with open aggressiveness; passive aggression really blows my mind but it’s all a part of the drama.
—————————————————————————————————————————————-
I was watching that reality show, “19 Kids & Counting” and it’s about that crazy family, the Duggars. They have 19 kids, born and raised by the married couple of that show. Apparently, the dad made a killing with investments and rental properties so they seem self-sufficient and aren’t on any government assisted programs. But still, something seems wrong, to me anyhow, about having 19 kids even if you have the means to provide for all of them. What do you think Dibi? - Jim Curry
Dibi: I can’t imagine having 19 Christian’s!!

The D-Side With Steve Sherman: Part 1

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

So my mom got a pretty good interview done with skate-turned-surf photographer Steve Sherman. It was cool to hear about Sherm’s roots; starting out as an 11-year-old skate rat in Indiana and then getting into photography, all within the curious progress to learn from what he had seen in skate rags and, in particular, the visionary musings of C.R. Stecyk.

The interview is going to be featured in an upcoming issue of Juice Magazine. But, in the meantime, you can click on the link (or copy and paste) to catch this little teaser piece with Sherm for the D-Side.

\And if you want to check out more of our clips and videos, go to YouTube and subscribe to our page, Zryder1.

Rumor has it, the next interview my mom is going to conduct will be with the elusive yet mystical Jason Jessee. That kinda makes him sound like a mysterious unicorn running through an enchanted forest, doesn’t it? I’m sure he’ll be pleased.

“Hey Dibi, is bacon really meat candy?”

Monday, June 6th, 2011

Just to remind you guys, I’ve left all the questions written as is. I’ve figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are and correct all your grammatical errors? Fuck that. - Christian

—————————————————————————————————————-

Why does Christian let meth heads shave his back? sounds dangerous to me! Haha – Recycled House
Dibi: I have no idea what you’re referring to, but it certainly sounds a bit odd.
—————————————————————————————————————-
Is BACON really meat candy??? – Recycled House
Dibi: Not as far as I know, ugh.

—————————————————————————————————————-

HOw was it back in the late 60s (or whenever that was) when Herb and Hynson were first experimenting with the downrailers? Do you remember it, did Herb express to you right off the bat that they were on to something? Must’ve been some cool times. – Cenen Aparicio
Dibi: Yes, I remember the era quite well. Herb was always into design and experimentation and pushing things forward. He believed in the down rail and still uses them today.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Nathan said in Surfline that he never even finished reading a book. That surprised me. Thought he was a reader? – Dale Newdsome
Dibi: I think he reads quite a bit, but I believe he has a more of a piece work attitude about gathering information.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hey dibbs, were you born in Hawaii? I know walter surfed Hawaii but cannot imagine not from the looks of your pics anyway that you were born back then when he was in Hawaii? – Kent Taloga
Dibi: No, I was born in California.

—————————————————————————————————————-

What has Greyson been up to? Any big plans for summer? The kid is an amazing skater! – Dante Hause
Dibi: Thanks, I think he has great style. He’s playing it by ear right now, but he and CF were planning on another trip to Japan for a surf/skate event in August.
—————————————————————————————————————-
What happened to the d-side, any new interviews? - Matty Growden
Dibi: I’ve been so busy with some other projects that the time has just slipped by. But I have some interview ideas that I’ll try to get and hopefully there will be some new D-Side cuts soon.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hi Dibi, what happened to the Christian Fletcher rad pad? And do you guys still keep in touch with Pottz? – Rick Crawford
Dibi: Things change as we move forward, we have a couple of CF pads in the line that seem good right now so will run them for a season or two and then redesign. We’re friendly with Pottz [Martin Potter] but our paths don’t cross much these days… but you never know what’s in the future.

—————————————————————————————————————-

I have a disagreement with my friend he says Herbe did San Clemente Locals but wasn’t it New? – Scott Aaronsen
Dibi: You are correct, it was Jeff Neu.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Has greyson ever worked with Larry Clark and Ed Templeton for skate photos and lifestyles? I can so see him doing this! He has the look! – Monica Sanchez
Dibi: No, he’s never worked with either.

—————————————————————————————————————-

I’ve read your answer somewhere before on Hey Dibi about how you made Nathan wear pink wetsuits so you could see him when he was out surfing. Great idea. But no one makes pink wetsuits anymore! – Mike Fionesco
Dibi: Well, if that’s the case, which I don’t know, I guess I’d have to be creative and use spray paint, rash guards or anything else that would allow me to spot him at a distance.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Have you ever been duped by a scheme? – David Lorin
Dibi: I thought I’d gone crazy when I looked at my magazine pile and noticed I had “Bird Magazine”, trying to win Ed McMahon’s Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes.
—————————————————————————————————————-
Did Christian and Nathan play a lot together when they were kid? I know there is a 5-6 year age difference. And I don’t mean surfing and skating, but doing things like watching TV together, doing homework, maybe helping you bake cookies. Tee hee. J - Diane Clarke
Dibi: They were best friends for years and did everything together. It was a really fun time for all of us.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Do you think Christian likes it when so many people always bring up his past in surfing and are stuck in that era? – Jess Ward
Dibi: I think he’s used to it, and I don’t think he lets it bother him one way or the other.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hey Dibi what do you think is the worst and ugly surfing related fashion trend of all time? – Heather Mitora
Dibi: I look back and laugh at some of the old photos, but they were contemporary during their time so they seemed cool.
—————————————————————————————————————-
Noticed CF likes MMA you think he’ll get into it like Rory [Parker]? – Jim Willis
Dibi: Who knows what he’ll do next? That’s one of the things I like best about him.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Does Christian still play in a band? What happened with axefuck and absolute? – Daniel Bacca
Dibi: No, not currently. Chris Williams passed away years ago and everyone else went their own ways.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Dibi you mind being called a m.i.l.f or does it bother you?!!!! – Robert Patchuka
Dibi: My dear, I didn’t even know what it meant until I asked, and if that’s the worse thing I’m called, I guess I’ll live with it.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Love Christian’s write-ups esp. the one of Motehers day with the photo of you and the boys! Nothing but love! How great you must feel! – Candace Nolan
Dibi: It’s been a long, very bumpy road, but life’s great right now, and I’m enjoying it to the fullest.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Why do you think that at 35, Nathan is still in the public eye with the magazines and in the surfing world where a lot of his contemporaries are now not even relevant anymore? Hello? Anyone remember Ratboy Collins and Colin Wagschal? – Tim Egerenoff
Dibi: Nathan is an innovator, a great designer, uniquely interesting, and honestly kind. Those are qualities that make him relevant, it’s not just surfing or, like you said, none of them would be forgotten.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hey Dibi, who designs the pads and sandals? You or Herbie? Or both? I know both of you are artists so does that go into creating your products or not? – Evelyn Jones
Dibi: We both do, and, yes, being artistic helps. But, honestly, in many instances we have to design for a public that is often quite a bit more conservative then either of us.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Do you think there is a difference between a surfer and a jock? Isn’t being a surfer an athelete and so many surfers are also competitive. – Wayne Wilde
Dibi: When I was growing-up, there was a real difference. But now the line is definitely blurring with the big contest money, agents, managers, trainers, corporate sponsorship by publicly traded companies, etc.  And that will be a factor that will forever change surfing. In some ways I find that very sad.
—————————————————————————————————————-
Hey I’ll ask Dibi maybe she can ask Herbie, what happened to Herbie’s “Revenge Mono Glue” ? – Peter Tripp
Dibi: Like many things we’ve done, it’s just part of the past.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Dibi whats the follow up with those crooks who tried to scam grandma Fletcher? – Darren Clifton
Dibi: That incident actually happened to my mom - not Herbie’s. And sorry to say there was nothing we could do except post it to let other people become aware.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hi Dibi what did the Nathan and Christian do for you on mother’s day? And greyson to! – Charlie Dillon
Dibi: We all met at my house and laughed a lot. It was great being together.

—————————————————————————————————————-

HEY! Hi Dibi! I think I read someone asking you about the car commercial you guys did a long time ago. Did you guys post that up? I think this was from 1990? – Brian Guerrero
Dibi: It was a Volvo commercial that we did with Bruce Weber. Bruce sold Volvo on the idea of how cool it would be to have this wild surf family represent the “All American family” car. They loved it - until they wanted to start changing everything. It was fun at the time; I love working with Bruce, but I never had a copy of the finished product.

—————————————————————————————————————-

There was a pic of Nathan and Herbie in 1989 or 1990 I think something like that herbie is towing in young Nathan it was in a mag maybe Surfer mag anyway you guys have that pic ? I tellin my friends Herbie first to tow Nathan and Christian and they say nahh no way. I say its TRUE there is proof!!! Maybe was this Zippers? No I do not know. – Juan Hortado
Dibi: You’re right! I’m not sure where the stills are, Herb’s out of town, but I have movies of Herb towing Christian in at Off the Wall in 1984!

—————————————————————————————————————-

LMAO please post more photos like that of you guys at Disneyland. Makes me laugh! I love it! – Jill Gardner
Dibi: Thanks, old family photos are always fun. We don’t have many to top that as most of our times were spent at the beach.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hey Dibi! So my question is: What do you think is very pure and natural about surfing and what do you think is pretentious and phony about it? Thanks, Hey Dibi is great! Look forward to it all the time! – Jen Carpenter
Dibi: I think the art of surfing is very Zen like, and the sport of surfing has become just like all the other sports.
—————————————————————————————————————-
Who movie character do you think each of you is similar to in personality. 1. Dibi 2. Herbie 3. Christen 4. Greyson Fletcher 5. Nathan Fletcher – Richard Brennen
Dibi: I think we’re our own movie, starring the Fletcher’s.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hey Dibi, did Greyson have to audition to get the part in John from Cincinnati or did you guys create the part with him already in mind to take the role? – Bill Naverette
Dibi: He was introduced to David Milch and hired.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hi Dibi, let’s write a memoir together. Between the two of us we can make the surf industry go in hiding from shame. – Sloth Fratelli
Dibi: I think a new soap opera would be great, much better then a memoir and a lot more fun!

—————————————————————————————————————-

Will you ever have a full showcase of your brilliant artwork on display on Christian’s site here or do we only get to see them once in awhile for Hey Dibi? L - Joey Heppler
Dibi: I’m not sure, things change so fast and I have some new things I’m working on that will probably be perfect for his sight.

—————————————————————————————————————-

Hi Dibi how are you? Read about the bastardization of the aerial maneuvers that so many of these so-called editors have been ruining. As well as the lack of recognition for Christian. Will it ever change? – Mark Toner
Dibi: I’m fine, thanks. If history is any indication, I doubt things will change much.
—————————————————————————————————————-
Any chance we can see the video on your website or some photo still of Christian and Nathan and Bloodshot and Gadnium from the Cabo contest days? Sick ass days for sure!! Memories! – Troy Murphy
Dibi: Ah, the Fletcher’s “Cabo Classic” was some fun. I’ll try to get some clips from the video and post them when we get a new website; We’re thinking about embedding videos and not uploading it on YouTube because then Google own’s the rights.

“Hey Dibi, I’m a former problem skateboarder because of your sons…”

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Just to remind you guys, I’ve left all the questions written as is. I’ve figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are and correct all your grammatical errors? Fuck that. - Christian

Hey Dibi, If a girl asks ya to go out with her and you want to but are flat broke , what do ya do ? Embarrassed to tell her your broke but don’t wanna blow her off again . - Mark Winnie

Dibi: Tell her your broke. Honesty is always best, and go do something like walking on the beach in the sunset - free and fabulous!

—————————————————————————————————————————————–
Hey Dibi, you are a hot mamacita! When was your first kiss? - Troy Victor

Dibi: Thank you. I assume you’re asking about a first BIG kiss; I’d have to say 7th grade if that’s the case.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–Hey Dibi where do you think mankind will be 100 years from now? - Jesse Monroe

Dibi: WOW, like now I’m Einstein, how great. Sometimes I wish I knew, but frankly I think that might take some of the fun out of the journey. On a serious note, if we don’t get our fiscal house in order, repeal health care, and address quite a few other hugely pertinent matters, we’re going to be in serious trouble long before the afore mentioned 100 years.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Heys Dibi, do you guys sell any of old nathenand christen bboards i will buy can you tell me? - joao olivas

Dibi: Do you mean the boards from when they were kids? That would be no. Their boards now? I’d have to ask them.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, So what exactly happened with Surfer? I couldn’t grasp it all due to Surfer Magazine’s censoring of Christian. - Wayne Thewlis

Dibi: Christian wrote a technical description of a Judo air and posted a picture of Al Partanen to illustrate his text on Surfer’s FB page, as they had made such an obvious mistake in their description in the Tricktionary article. They deleted it and CF reposted it until they blocked him from being able to post anything. Herb went to their office on another issue and it spilled over. They finally admitted by phone that because he’s not sponsored his comments are not relevant. Pretty interesting, don’t you think??

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hi dibi, I’ve attached a photo and sent it to Christian’s message invoice of this great photo of Nathan next to one of your mannequin paintings, do you happen to have some more of those photos? I had asked you about it before and you said you were going to post them up but haven’t. :(   - Jenny Rovin

Dibi: I never received a photo, and I apologize, but I really don’t know what photos you’re referring to. There’s been a lot of photos over the years and it’s more then difficult to keep track.

—————————————————————————————

Greyson Thunder? Is there a Lightning Fletcher? - Scott Chapman

Dibi: Not that I know of Scott, but I’ll keep it in mind.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, I’m a former problem skateboarder because of your sons. - Jeff Hemp Samms

Dibi: Former, um, no more skateboarding or no more problems?

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Ok Christian said we could be nosy! I’m so curious about you, Dibi! What was your childhood like? Where did you grow up? I’ve read before you were the dancer and Joyce the tomboy. - Francis Hillstrom

Dibi: Yes I was a dancer, but I’d also say I was a risk taker. I grew up fast, left home in Capistrano Beach really early, and had Christian while I was still a teenager. That’s when I really started finding out who I was. I love to learn, I’m really a perfectionist about my own skills and very demanding that I live up to the goals I’ve set for myself. I’m never bored, there won’t be enough time to master all the things I’d like to. I cook dinner every night and love to laugh.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Sweet, sour, salty or all three? - Nance Pughlia

Dibi: Ah, you didn’t mention HOT. Love the Vietnamese hot sauce that makes your nose run and eyes water.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, I saw a photo of Nathan’s dog not to long ago in an issue of Transworld Surf. What kind of breed is that? - Heather Akrim

Dibi: I believe it’s a Poi dog. An adorable mutt.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi what’s the most physical pain y ou’ve ever been in? - Matty Ratty

Dibi: I have a pretty high tolerance for physical pain, it’s the mental shit that’s really a killer for me. I guess having a baby ranks up there, but it was over so quick, and it’s quite difficult to conjure up past pain as it’s now just a thought. Maybe when I had a few appendix attacks, but it was so long ago, it’s just another memory.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Have the Fletcher’s lost any friends due to the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami? - Dylan Rouse

Dibi: As of now, I haven’t heard that any of our friends have perished, for which we are sincerely grateful. It”s a terrible tragedy and I feel so sad for the entire Japanese nation. It’s amazing to watch them behave in such a state of grace while the news worsened everyday. I hope that they can rebuild their country and lives quickly and I’m happy to help in whatever way I can.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Seems like Christian & Grayson had a great time in Japan. How has the earthquake affected them? - Ralph Benson

Dibi: They were devastated, as we all were. They have managed to contact many friends and are waiting to hear from more that are hopefully just unable to communicate at present. It’s been quite a wake-up call.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi do you know what helps determine Christian, Nathan, greyson and even Herbie to sign that dotted line as far as going with a particular company? I mean, in this great big dog-eat-dog world it’s always about money but are there other factors involved as well? - Bryant LaVoult

Dibi: I think there are a lot of other factors that, when not taken into consideration, can create an acrimonious relationship between a rider and sponsor. I agree that the money is important, but sometimes it might be better to take less and be happy. I think that may be more important in the long run then any amount of money.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, So question….. I don’t suppose I can trade off with you? Do some yard work, be your cabana pool boy, etc for one of your killer art pieces? ;) - Danny Kellson

Dibi: Although it does sound tempting, I have to reject the offer at this time. I just don’t have enough time to make the art I’d like so what I have has become that much more valuable to me.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, What do you love about your life right now and what do you hate about it? - Nate Greenberg

Dibi: I love having the opportunity to see Christian and Greyson spending time together. I’m not sure that I really hate anything in my life, being an adult is filled with responsibility but that’s just part of the deal.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, I’m a huge fan of your sister Joyce. And would love to relay a question on to her if that’s okay? My question is, who was her most formiddable rival and who does she think, then and now, has been underrated and overrated as a surfer (either male or female) and would she like to be a pro surfer competing in the WCT in this day and age? Thank you! - Uri Millanovich

Dibi: I called Joyce and asked her your questions. Here are her answers: “Margo Godfrey-Oberg.”, “No idea.” And “No, I think I surfed competitively in the best of times.”

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Well since CF won’t answer us maybe you will dibi, so here it is thrown back at him, lol, or you I should say! What’s something that you’ve been putting off but that you know you should get to it as soon as possible? - Dave Simmons

Dibi: I’m the wrong person to ask. I always do everything I don’t like to do first, to get off my plate, unlike most of the guys I know.

—————————————————————————————

Hey dibi, is it true that herb’s formed a band with Micky Munoz? I heard it through the grapevine!- Bill Wingman

Dibi: No, as funny as the idea sounds, there’s absolutely no truth to it.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi I asked Christian but he didn’t answer does he go to Board & Brew in San Clemente right off of Pico? Coulda sworn I saw him there! - Chris Hallen

Dibi: Occasionally, our office is near there and he and Greyson stop by to get a sandwich. Hold the mayo!
—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, had Herbie not been a great surfer, do you think  your boys would have found interests outside of surfing and skating? - Theresa Paulin

Dibi: It’s hard to say. I always lived on the beach and raised my kids there, it just happened naturally.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi. How is Nathan doing? Please give him my regards about Sion. Thank you. - Lynn Mercutio

Dibi: It’s always difficult to lose a friend, and I’m sure it affected him deeply. It’s all so very sad.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi! finally a page just for you! So I am really digging the art work with your painting and sculptures you have shared with us. Have you ever gotten into photography? - Steven Whimmer

Dibi: No, that’s Herb’s deal and there just doesn’t seem to be enough time to do it all, even though I’d love to.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Whew thought I had missed an edition of hey dibi! Glad to see your still accepting questions for now. Have you thought about getting your own show on Sirius? I am serious! This is good, woman! - Cassie Berhman

Dibi: No, I don’t even know what that would entail. But I assume if there is enough of a following, sometime in the future, it wouldn’t be out of the question.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, PC or Mac? - Neil Morgan

Dibi: PC at work and I’m getting a new Mac for home.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, JFK’s assasination, 9/11, the space shuttle exploding, etc. What historical event has jolted you? (Is this question out of line for Christian’s website? Teehee.) - Toni Bustamante

Dibi: All of what you mentioned, and many more national and international events shocked me. And many personal events as well. But what’s going on right now; Japan, Libya, Afghanistan, total unrest in the Middle East, car bombs in Israel, the budget crisis, the price of oil and the astonishing fact that we hear about it all at once seems to keeps me in the present and it’s all very scary.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi you’re beautiful! I can’t believe Greyson is your grandson! No way! You’re too young to be a grandma! Heck you’re too young to be Christian and Nathan’s mom! That being said how would you compare motherhood to grandmotherhood? Thanks for the opportunity! This  is fun! - Ryan Silk

Dibi: Thank you. Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Greyson much while he was growing-up, but he now lives with me so the relationship we have is ours to create, it’s not filled with a lot of memories that sometimes cloud the present. I believe we’re both very respectful of each other and there isn’t the sense of entitlement from him that ones own children have with their parents, so we’re very lucky in that sense. I adore my sons, and certainly I feel that way about Greyson as well, and I’m quite sure the feeling is mutual.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi your opinion please? Do you think it’s wrong if a surfer is not a complete surfer? I mean, if someone is really good at big wave riding and just getting tubed, is that okay? Or should he be working on doing those airs too? By the way tell christian he killed it and fuck those guys at Surfer Mag! - Paul Gillian
Dibi: I don’t think surfing should be filled with rules. There is no complete or incomplete surfer if you ask me, it was supposed to be fun!

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, Dang you sure are pretty. What is the story behind your default photo, Dibi? Looking through the mirror I call it… - Mark Bunn

Dibi: The mirror is on a door in my house that I painted, and Herb thought it would be fun to get a photo before going to my folks for Christmas. He’s always wanting to take pictures and I never liked having mine taken much, although I do love to dress-up, so occasionally there’s a compromise and it often turns out fun.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, What’s the worst lie you ever told to your parents and what’s the worst lie that Christian and Nathan told you and Herbie as kids and thought they were gonna get away with but didnt’? LoL. - Jeff Mercer

Dibi: That I was going to school in Santa Barbara and ran away with Herbie instead. Christian was devilish but not much of a liar; he may have omitted the exact truth but neither he nor Nathan were big into lying. I tried to teach them early on that lying is one of the worst human characteristics.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, im thinking of ditching the family and going to Tavarua by myself…..what should i do? - Tavarua Trippers

Dibi: Wow, I’m the wrong one to ask. To me family comes first, no matter what!

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, Ugh Dibi! I’m dating a surfer. He’s not even a professional surfer, just a guy who thinks about the surf nonstop and it’s driving me nuts! All our vacations are planned around where he wants to go surf. On days off,, he’s at the beach. On weekends, it’s the beach. Really hate to sound like the other woman…but I’m getting jealous over the beach! Am I being unfair? It is his passion and it’s healthy. - Quinn Shannon

Dibi: Guys are always going to play, that’s part of their nature. He has a job you said, so I’d be stoked that his hobby is relatively inexpensive and healthy. If you don’t want to go all the time, great, I don’t either. That’s why I have my own interests. But the beach life style was a great way to raise kids and I’m very grateful that the boys always had that in common with their dad.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, Over the years I have always known the Fletchers as a San Clemente (Orange County) fixture. Have you guys ever considered living anywhere else? - Mike Abbott

Dibi: We’ve lived in Sun Valley, Idaho, and spent quite a bit of time in Hawaii. But it was easier to be in business here, and after all, we had two kids to look after so it was a decision that we made as being best for the family.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, how do you like your eggs? - Brice Hannah

Dibi: I don’t care for eggs.

—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, is it true that someone pulled a knife on Christian in Hawaii when he had that black mohawk? - Gregory Thor Weimar

Dibi: I haven’t heard the story, but I’ll ask him when he returns from Florida. He did lead a life on the edge, so anything’s possible.

“Hey Dibi, seems like you’ve always supported your kids in whatever they wanted to do. What’s something you put your foot down and said ‘NO!’ to?”

Thursday, February 24th, 2011

Just to remind you guys, I’ve left all the questions written as is. I’ve figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are and correct all your grammatical errors? Fuck that. - Christian

Does Nathan still Weld dibi? - Yeman Stouch

Dibi: Yes, he’s made me some very interesting pieces. I think he’s quite talented.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi  what is your take on organized religion? - Thomas Povey

Dibi: I think everyone wants to feel better about themselves and the world, and if joining a group of like-minded people is for you, great.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi! I remember Nathan used to take flying license right? Did he ever get his pilot’s license.

Dibi: We started the lessons when he was 15, and he didn’t complete them then, but he came by last summer and got all the books, so I assume he’s wanting to start back up again. I’m stoked for him.

and here’s my #2 question seems like you’ve always supported your kids in whatever they wanted to do. What’s something you put your foot down and said “NO!” to? - Craig Osumi

Dibi: That’s hard, of course there have been stupid things that any young kid might do that I would have said no to; water balloon launchers out my Mom’s second story at the highway, etc. But anything that was interesting and exciting and pushed them to develop new skills, I’ll help anyway I can.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi, am I crazy for being a huge fan of not only you Dibi but the whole fam Fletcher damily? Lol! - Jimmy Gould

Dibi: No crazier then any of the rest of us,I guess. It’s all just fun.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, how did you guys meet/know Annie Leibovitz. Really rad photo shoot with Malcom! - Ernie Bruhner

Dibi; My friend who worked with us for many years was friends with Lauren Hutton and Malcom. We were invited to the photo shoot and the rest is in the picture.

—————————————————————————————

Dibi, did you guys have nathan and christian seaparted by 5 years on purpose? just wonderen! - Mike Clancy

Dibi: Yes, I thought it was nice to let Christian get a chance to be a baby before having to grow up and be an older brother. He was quite a terror; but when Nathan came along he was a great help and he and Nathan had a grand time together.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi, you are a beaut! I’m sure many of CF and NF’s friends had crushes on you! Is it true you went to CF’s school and embarrassed him with hot pants on? - Gregory Ross

Dibi: It wasn’t hot pants; it was a red leather mini skirt, fish net hose, purple suede boots, long rhinestone earrings, and I had pink stripes in my hair. Obviously, it worked because I never had to be a parent escort again, and Christian and I laugh about it to this day.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi and Christian, thank you for adding me! I love all you Fletchers but Greyson puts a smile on my face! Can you ask Greyson what he wants for his bday? :P   - Jodie Kulver

Dibi: Probably to skate a great bowl, he’s a guy!

—————————————————————————————

Dibi! Ask your husband Herbie why he drops in on everyone!!! All the time!!!! - Rick Keegan

Dibi: Because he can!!!

—————————————————————————————

Dibs, I see you out but never in the water, why not? - Harris Puget

Dibi: Because I don’t go in unless the water’s really warm.

—————————————————————————————

any big wave escapades from nate so far this year? danny montoya

Dibi: He’s been riding huge waves. We’ve posted some photos on FB, and I’m sure they’re all over the internet if you want to search. He seems fearless.

—————————————————————————————

NO Fair CF you suck! Answer your own damn questions! ROFL! Ok fine! Ii’ll ask tu madre! Dibi Fletcher! What is something weird YOU and CF like to eat! - Tim O.

Dibi: Christian lived in Bali for some time and ate everything, UGH!!! I’m very health-conscious and eat very light.

—————————————————————————————

What’s up Dibi! Tell Greyson that I’m putting his vote in for Skater of the Year even though his name’s not on the ballot! Stupid fuckers! Greyson Fletcher all the way! - Kevin Aragon

Dibi: Cool, I’ll tell him. I think he’s got great style.

—————————————————————————————

That Fast Eddie interview was an A ticket ride! Any more? - T.L.

Dibi: You bet, I loved him as a jokester. I don’t think many people see him in that light, and I thought it was hilarious.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi! Do you have any tattoos yourself? - Tianna Rocha

Dibi: No, I never thought they were for me. I love art and my taste evolves; I never wanted to be stuck with something I’d grown out of.

—————————————————————————————

Is it insulting that I see you and Herbie more like the artsy folk rather than the surf folks? Love all the imagery and artwork you guys have on your sites! BIG BIG FAN! - Stewart Riggs

Dibi: Of course not, that’s how we see ourselves.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi, how has it been with CF back and sober? Do you think this is finally it? - Bob “Malibu” Grady

Dibi: It’s wonderful, I’m grateful everyday. I certainly hope so for all our sakes, but I guess time will tell. It sure seems good.

—————————————————————————————

What do you think is Nathan’s longevity when most pro surfers his age are now pretty much on the back burner? - Kai Jensen

Dibi: Big wave riding is like an entirely different sport and it extends the careers longevity. He’s still amazing, so I guess we’ll just wait and see what’s up his sleeve for Act II.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, will you be posting any more photos of yourself taken by Bruce Weber? Thank you. - Gabby Lopez

Dibi: Maybe in the future, I don’t like to post personal photos he’s taken of us over the years, I feel it’s infringing on our friendship and I’d never want to do that.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi, will you guys reissue or sell again those trade cards? I have 3 (archy, christian and gary elkerton) and would like to add to my collection! - Sam Davis

Dibi: Herb and I talked about it recently, we didn’t come up with an answer but maybe I’ll revisit the conversation and see if there’s a market.

—————————————————————————————

Dibi, can you ask Greyson a question for me, what trick he is trying to learn and ha been the hardest for him to conquer? - Trent Whitber

Dibi: I’m sorry, Greyson’s in Japan and will be back in a few days; I’ll ask him then, so please repost your question and I’ll answer it in the next column.

—————————————————————————————

Outside of the typical surf and skate labels/brands, who would you, Dibi, not Christian, but you who would YOU want Christian to be sponsored by?

Dibi: He looked fabulous in Versace when Bruce Weber used to shoot him. I think it should be something really unpredictable. Ralph Lauren’s Purple Label perhaps? I love the absurd in life, so I think that might be a good fit.

—————————————————————————————

What depresses you Dibi Fletcher? I mean really downright fucking depress you that you want to cry?!!! - Marcus Phenbam

Dibi: My kid doing drugs!!! It’s the most heartbreaking experience a parent can live through. It’s so senseless.

—————————————————————————————

Dibi, many years ago, I truly loved and admired the artword (ads)  you did for Christian Fletcher. The image of Christian with the mohawk, the image of him surfing with black trunks on, etc. Could you please post these beautiful paintings again or any more of that kind that you did? And do you continue to do this medium? - Chara Rowlin

Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. I haven’t been painting a lot recently. I’ve been doing a lot more writing, but hope to get some time here pretty soon to get back in the studio.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi: So real quick, favorite scent, favorite memory, favorite drink, favorite snack, favorite person, favorite conversation, favorite hobby, and favorite person to hate. Look forward to your answers! - Steve Phillips

Dibi: Prada, a million favorite memories (I’ve had a long life), water, I’m not much of an eater, I can’t just pick one favorite person, the one I’m engaged at the time, ditto, there’s a few on the list  - and I hope you don’t know them and if you do, you hate them also so there’s no use to mention them by name.

—————————————————————————————

Okay Im’a gonna put you on the hot spot Dibi. What do you think is a move that Nate and Christian do really well and what do you think even after all these years, they can still work on? Oh i’m talking surfing! - Brian

Dibi: They both do great airs. Nathan’s doing things in big waves that are amazing. They’re having fun and being respectful what more could I want???

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, nothing tastes better than the first bite of an apple or a slice of cantaloupe. What’s something simple that you take delight in? A fruity question from a fruit, so yes, dear, what tantalizes your taste buds? ;) - Eric Parker

Dibi: Casaba melon is rub-your-feet-together fabulous.

—————————————————————————————

Have u ever been to a Turkish prison? - Calculatą Decimation Noce

Dibi: No, I’ve thankfully managed to stay out of all prison systems.

—————————————————————————————

Dibi, were you a good kid, stubborn kid, bad kid, complacent kid. I gotta know what kind of kid eventually turned out to be CF’s mom! Ha ha ! - Paul Stewart

Dibi: I never lied, cheated or stole anything. I was very determined to do what I wanted. I was bright, hated school and authority. I ran away early and have tried to live honestly with my choices.

—————————————————————————————

Dibi Christian asked us about selling out, what do you think is a sell out and is selling out all so bad? Of course CF didn’t bother to answer his own question sooo - Brett Fischer

Dibi: I really don’t know what is selling out. By the time you’re my age, you better figure out how to buy in.

—————————————————————————————

Dibi, the Bible Bowl??? CF does bible study? LOL say it ain’t so! LMAO!!! - Larry Nohr

Dibi: No, he doesn’t do bible study; he and Greyson are lucky enough to be invited there to skate.

—————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi, Herbie, Christian, Greyson and Nathan: Do you guys ever all just sit down and trip on what a wild adventure your lives have been? - Scott Kroeger

Dibi: Sometimes, and it’s really fun and interesting as each one of us tends to bring up a different memory that we get to laugh about. Sharing your history and getting to see it from different perspectives is always amazing. I feel very fortunate.

—————————————————————————————

Here is a question from yesteryear, at the time when your sister Joyce Hoffman was at the peak of her surfing career, who were her sponsors? - Daniel Lumont

Dibi: It was so different then, I remember Leland Triumph Motors gave her a car to use when she traveled to different countries, as did Honda Motorcycles. She got her boards from Hobie. She received a small bit of money and product for Bonnie Bell Cosmetics and was also in their ads. Random things like that, but it wasn’t anything like now.

—————————————————————————————

hi dibi, John From Cincinnati. Was the character played by Rebecca DeMornay based on you? Which of the characters were the most like their counterpart (you, CF, Herbie, etc) and the most like their counterparts? - Thomas Allison

Dibi: It was never supposed to be about us, and I really don’t see any similarities between the characters and the members of my family.

—————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, ha ha, this is so cool asking Christian and Nathan’s mom questions. So I read on Stab that interview with Nathan, was that all fabricated? If not, is there still sibling drama? Man, me and my brothers have really gone at it and have had blown out fights so I can relate! - Nick Mochino

Dibi: I believe Christian and Nathan have really come to a better understanding and have started to rebuild their friendship, and I’m stoked for that. Bruce [Irons] will never have the chance, so call your brothers - they’re the only ones you’ve got.

Hey Dibi: “Who do you think is a jerk?”

Friday, January 28th, 2011

Just to remind you guys, I’ve left all the questions written as is. I’ve figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are and correct all your grammatical errors? Fuck that. - CF

"AS A BLONDE" By Dibi Fletcher

Hi Dibi, you’re a hoot! Very fun! Have you ever gotten into a physical altercation with someone? - Joe Gowin (I live in Scott’s Valley but used to live in Capo Beach and really enjoy Christian’s Facebook!)

Dibi: No, I’ve never thought that was a great way to handle differences of opinion.
————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, what are you completelly PRO and completelly ANTI?? - Cassie Jordan

Dibi: Pre: Personal freedom. Anti: Government intrusion.

————————————————————————————

I have seen your pics on hey dibi you’re very pretty and youthful I cannot believe you have son old enough like Christian! Sorry if this is personal to much but were you a teen mother? I had my daughter at 17 and it has been so hard and I am 25 now and days I just want to give up but I’ve grown lots with her and she really is my life. Sorry if this personal. - Amy J.

Dibi: Yes, I was a teen mom, and there were plenty of difficult times. I think that’s a part of life, and most people want to run away, believe me, there’s no place to run. You just create another set of problems. So relax and enjoy the process as best you can; it’s over quicker then you can imagine.

————————————————————————————

Hey there Dibi. What a great forum! Here’s my question; A few years ago I had seen a photo that I contribute to Bruce Weber. It was amazing and featured you dancing. Was this for a particular photo shoot with Bruce Weber? It was a bit grainy - even to the point of looking like a frame grab - but that may have been the speed of the camera shutter? I’m also familiar with the Fletcher Clan in Weber’s documentary, “Chop Suey Club” which I thoroughly enjoyed. Been a sideline observer of the Fletcher’s ever since. Anywho, any bit of information you’re willing to share about that particular, I’d greatly appreciate. - Christopher Kevins

Dibi: I really got into ballroom dancing for quite awhile and went to many competitions. Rhinestones, feather dresses… what’s not to love? The particular photo you’re referring to was from the Fontainebleau in Miami. The event offers you the opportunity, for a cost, to buy videos of your different dances, which I did and let Bruce use some of it and also pull some grabs for stills. So, you’re perfectly correct.

————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Do you and Herbie plan on staying in San Clemente or will you guys retire to somewhere else. LONG LIVE ASTRODECK! - Hugh Madero

Dibi: Never know what’s in the future, I like to be open and flexible so I can take advantage of opportunities that might come my way.

————————————————————————————

OMG I really love HEY DIBI it’s my favorite thing ever! Why don’t you do a HEY DIBI directly on Christian’s Facebook? - Sara Hodges

Dibi: I feel it’s better to do it in the format that I am, or I believe it will just morph into another Facebook post.

————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi. I have a question for you that is more directed towards Christian, I guess. Since you are his mom, will you MAKE HIM answer his own questions! Lol. He asks such fun questions on Facebook but never answers his own questions! Inquiring minds want to know! - Jake Pena

Dibi: Dude, I’ve never been able to make him do shit! Think now it’s going to be any different? I think he’s enjoying what’s happening and you seem to also, so why mess with it?
————————————————————————————
LOL so Christian did porn? Yah right! That was a good one he pulled on us! But would you be ashamed of him if he actually did??? Hmmmmm!!! - 204’s Owen

Dibi: I guess I’ll never know, so why speculate?

————————————————————————————

Hello Dibi! I recently noticed that Nathan had a tattoo on his leg, but wasn’t able to view it upclose. Would you happen to know what the image is? Thank you. - Erin Howse

Dibi: I really don’t remember, it was never an issue so I didn’t pay that much attention.

————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi, will there be more of that Dside with Walter? It was great. Thanks. - Joey S.
Dibi: Yes, working on one for next week.

————————————————————————————

Dibi what kind of humor/comedy do you like? Slapstick, dry, etc? Just curious! - Caesar Medina
Dibi: Don’t care much for slapstick. Dry and ironic seems more amusing. I laugh at myself daily, and find life and most people’s opinions of themselves vastly amusing.

————————————————————————————

HI! I know you own Tar Farms in San Juan. Years before that, were you the one who rode in the San Juan Rodeo? Jesse Avila said I am wrong that it’s not you because you didn’t live here at the time! - Henry Choate

Dibi: My older sister Joyce rode in the parade, I think 100 years ago, and it’s my parents who own Tar Farms
————————————————————————————-

Hey Dibi, is it true you ran away from home when you were 15? I think I have read this several times in interviews. - K.W.

Dibi: I had just turned 16; very mature and responsible. (That’s a joke!)
————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi, what is something that you were very much interested in (a sport, hobby, movie, etc) and wanted Christian, Nathan and Herbie to also enjoy but they just had no interest in? - Audrey Rose

I can’t think of anything off hand. I enjoyed the fact that we had different taste. Really, they’re guys and I’d never want or expect them to enjoy some of the things I find amusing, enchanting or interesting. That’s why I have girlfriends.
————————————————————————————-
I think everyone here on Christian’s Facebook looks forward to his posts when he links the new Hey Dibi. I know I look forward to it. Does that make me sad, obsessed with Dibi Fletcher, or just a great questioning participant? :)  - Matt Furhman

Dibi: Hey, I’m not judging, this is all fun.
————————————————————————————-
What happened to THE D—SIDE? I used to like watching the interviews. You guys ever feature any skaters? - McGill’s Minion

Dibi: Thanks, we’re doing a segment for the D-Side next week. I’ve talked to a couple of skaters, it’s just getting them down here that seems to be the problem.
————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, what is the dumbest question you been asked and the best question? - Dwight Barr

Dibi: I get asked the same thing over and over, so perhaps that makes it seem dumb, and anything that challenges me seems great.
————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, does anything or anyone intimidate you? - Carl Chapman

Dibi: There have been a lot of difficult things I’ve had to face in life that made me really doubt myself, but that’s just part of the process that is unavoidable. After coming out of that dark place you feel great, the sun’s out, the world is magic again. But eventually the process starts all over again. Am I scared of life, or intimidated by it, no, I hope I do it to the best of my ability.
————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi what has been that one shocking instant moment where something just made your jaw drop? - Rudy Sinclair

Dibi: There have been too many to recall. There’s shock with AWE, there’s shock with FRIGHT, there’s embarrassment and a whole host of others and I’m able to say I’ve had them all.
————————————————————————————-
LMAO That is the BEST family photo ever! We never took photos like that at Disneyland! How old were the groms at the time? - Phil Allen

Dibi: Thanks, I thought it was really cute it’s so out of character. I think CF is 9 or 10 so that makes Nathan 4 or 5.
————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi and Christian, lol, classic family photo. Christian, my parents made us pose like this at Knott’s Berry Farm. Sorry I guess the question I have is, Dibi & Herbie - why do parents torture us kids this way??? Lol! - Jerry Weimar

Dibi: Because we love you, and we end up with a few cheesy photos!
————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, because your family has had celebrity in the surf world, do you sympathize and understood when other celebrities seem to be targeted and maligned? - Kurt Jenner

Dibi: Yes, it’s  very interesting to watch how things unfold, but it’s mostly the big companies that really manipulate the market.
————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, who do you think is a jerk? - Adam Tovin

Dibi: I’ve got a list, and I’m trying to thin it down; you know, like growing up.
————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi, I think Christian is a bigger softie than we all ever thought he was. True? - Dave Nyghen

Dibi: I think he’s a lot of things no one would ever imagine.
————————————————————————————-
Dibi, what HAS to change about the surfing industry? After Christian’s shake-up, nothing’s really been that exciting. Why is everyone such a big part of that flock of sheep? - Jon Van Duyn

Dibi: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is my answer!!!
————————————————————————————-
Dibi, I know this isn’t really an advice column like Ann Landers but I sure would like your opinion on something. I try to please everyone and in the process, I always get  hurt. I’m tired of it and now I’m thinking I’m going to start being a little more selfish. I’m very tired of getting hurt and putting in all my efforts to not get the same in return. I’m starting to get deeply depressed about it becaus I feel like I’m being constantly used. After reading Hey Dibi since it’s start and watching the Dside interviews, I must say you’ve gained a fan in me and I find your thoughts and input very foundational. Am I being selfish to want to be selfish? Thank you for your perspective. - Naomi K.

Dibi: We all have choices and I’ve made plenty that have forced to think twice. As a middle kid, I’ve always been a pleaser. There’s been great pleasure in doing things for others and maybe the way to really get that pleasure is to do it with no expectations. It’s a fine line between giving and being used but you’ll be the only one that can make that call for yourself. Good Luck!
—————————————————————————————————————-
“I See Buddhas everywhere” is a phenomenal piece of artwork. Ever think of having your own website dedicated to just displaying a showcae of your work for all the WWW to see? No offense to christian but putting it on his website seems limiting to just the surfer crowd. =)  - Lillian T.

Dibi: Thanks. Yes, I’ve thought of having my own website but, at present, I just don’t have time. So I guess Christian and I can share some space for now. We both enjoy the opportunity to work together.
————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi, I like to put a lot of sugar on my breakfast grapefruit. I just pour heaps of sugar on top. Then i lick all the sugar off and throw away the grapefruit. Do you do this too? - NumbSkull @ Taco Bell Reef

Dibi: No, I have a smoothie for breakfast so everything is blended together. Perhaps you can try that.
————————————————————————————-
Hello Dibi, surely there have been so many misconceptions about the Fletcher family but what is admittedly an accurate conception? - William De Leon

Dibi: We’re a family, just like everyone else, perhaps with the volume turned up a bit.
————————————————————————————-
Hey Dibi, do you know how to play any instruments? - Kevin Hall

Dibi: No, and I really wish I did. I rented a piano for awhile and took lessons, but, sadly, just didn’t have the time to practice. Took singing lessons, switched to opera which I loved, but again, just couldn’t commit the time to it with all the other work I have to do to keep the ball rolling.
————————————————————————————-
Hi Dibi, after reading several of these, it seems like you and Christian and Herbie and Greyson and Nathan are all doing well. I’m glad you stop to smell the roses. And it’s great seeing Christian active on Facebook and sharing with the rest of us that he’s still around! Blessed be to you all! - Miriam Heatherton

Dibi: Thank you very much. It’s so nice to have everyone healthy and stoked, it’s been a long, tough road.
————————————————————————————
Hey Dibi, sorry for the loss of Flippy. Speaking of Flippy, I’ve read about the history of him and Walter. Such rich history. I’m curious how they became known as the “Dana Point Mafia” and why they settled on raising their families in Orange County and not somewhere like Malibu. I ask this because I thought they were originally from Los Angeles and geographically thought maybe LA county beaches made more sense? - Ray Dillard

Dibi: Some writer gave them that name in print and it was used many times after, so it kind of stuck. They liked it down here because it wasn’t Malibu. It was very quiet with nothing going on but lots of great surf. They had always had a summer house in Laguna, so they just gravitated to the area when they bought their first homes and thought that living directly on the beach was worth the commute.

Hey Dibi: “I’m not a groupie. I just act like one.”

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

Just to remind you guys, I’ve left all the questions written as is. I’ve figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are and correct all your grammatical errors? Fuck that. - CF

Hey Dibi, whatever happened to Think Fast? I was at a store in Malibu a couple of years back and bought a Think Fast shirt. It was two sizes to big but I remembered it was Nate’s gig so I wanted to buy it and save it as a memento. I see CF’s comeback  here on FB with his apparel and whatnot but what about Think Fast and Nate? - Troy Viske
Dibi: Nathan rides for Analog and it would be a conflict of interest at the present time. Maybe at some later date he’ll want to revive it, so stay tuned.
————————————————————————————–
Hi Dibi, do you believe in astrology if so how deeply? What is your sign and Herbie’s? Are you guys compatible? - Grace O’Neal
Dibi: I think some of it’s quite interesting, but I don’t let it dictate my life. Herb is a Capricorn and I’m a Virgo; we’re quite compatible.

————————————————————————————–

Hey there Dibi! “John From Cin” was great though I’ve read you want nothing to do with it. Why is that? Was it not headed in the direction you wanted it to? - John From Santa Barbara
Dibi: I don’t think it was headed anywhere, and obviously HBO didn’t either.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, do you have an itinerary of all the events Greyson will be skating at? Thank you! (P.S. I’m not a groupie I just act like one. :p) - Devin MacAllister
Dibi: No, I think he and Christian are playing it by ear right now. The Ultimate Boarder is coming up and I think they’ll be participating. Other then that, who knows?

————————————————————————————–

Hello Dibbie, do you sell personal photos of Nathan? Or do you know if Gotcha or Art Brewer would sell any from their archives? I am looking for photos of Nathan ages 14-17. Thank you. NF Fan/Collector - Tamara Weitz
Dibi: I’m sorry, I sure don’t. Gotcha is long gone and I can’t answer for Artie.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, do you think if Greyson wasn’t a Fletcher he’d be interested in something say like medicine or law or engineering? - PT Vacarro
Dibi: I’m sure I can’t answer with any authority, who knows what any of us might have been had we been born into different circumstances?

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, where do you think social networking will be 5 years from now? Facebook surely has openeed doors for us looking at a glimpse of you, christian and nathan’s mama and christian the man himself! Thanks for always sharing! - David Pedersen
Dibi: If I knew where we’d be in five years, I might have made different choices. But here we are being able to connect with people globally in an open forum and I’m grateful. So, I guess I’ll just watch it all unfold and be a part of what I can.

————————————————————————————–

Sorry for the loss of your dad I read about him and Christian put his picture up surfing a long time ago. Sorry for your loss again Dibi Fletcher. - Reggie Schmidt
Dibi: Thank you for you condolences, but it was my Uncle Flippy, my father’s brother, that passed away after being very ill for awhile.

————————————————————————————–

So is it true Nathan forgot to deposit and cash in a check for 20 grand? WTF??????????????? - Steve J.

Dibi: I have no idea? I’ve never heard anything about a missing 20 grand, but it makes for an interesting story.

————————————————————————————–

Don’t take this the wrong way, Herbie. A true big fan of your surfing AND artwork. Your boards are friggin’ amazing! But come on, dude, let’s show up some Dibi artwork! I recall her artboard pieces before. Upload them on your site dude! Don’t hold back! - Gary Hanson
Dibi: Thanks, I need to get some new photos done and then we’ll put them up.

————————————————————————————–

OMGGGGGGGGGG Yippee! Loved the pic of Christian with Santa. And I love all your other photos. You are so beautiful and graceful and elegant! You certainly are a beauty. The family photos you share with us is what I look forward to most as well as your thoughtful and honest insight! - Cynthia Milos
Dibi: Thanks, doing this is one of the fun things that comes my way. I’m glad you enjoy it.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, who is on the offical Astrodeck Team Roster? - Joe Nied
Dibi: Is there an official team roster? We’ve had so many great riders over the years, I don’t know where to start.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi. Here’s a fun question, I think. Name both a TV character and a Film character you identify with and who you would like to portray. - Jamison Casem
Dibi: I guess Mrs. Cleaver’s out. How about Lucy for TV and any of the dames in my favorite Film Noir classics for the screen.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, Conan and Jay are stale. And oprah’s overrated. We need you, woman. we need all of everyone to read this stuff not just CF’s fans! - HB Fan
Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. You never know what life has in store, so I’m on for the ride.

————————————————————————————–

2010 must have been awful for you Dibi and Herbie and your sons with the loss of Philip and Andrew. - Stacy Ferber
Dibi: Loss is always sad, but there’s always wonderful things as well to keep the balance. I try to stay positive and be grateful; all things pass.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi! I truly enjoy surfing the Facebook pages as well as Herb’s, Christian’s and the Astrodeck websites. Always a good visual read. I enjoy “Hey Dibi” and The D-Side chronicles as well as Christian’s insane humor and Herbie’s art trips. When are we going to be exposed to a website solely dedicated to your projects? Really enjoy the Fletcher collaborations! - Mark Chapmann
Dibi: Right now, I’m kept plenty busy keeping everyone glued together, and it seems right. I’m a great team player and as you said, the above are works of collaboration so it seems fitting for the time being.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, Greyson doesn’t answer questions. neither does christian so I’ve come to you. would greyson do another show or a movie if the material was something he would be interested in? Wondering is all. - Manic Panic
Dibi: He seems very happy doing what he’s doing right now, but who knows what’s in the future?

————————————————————————————–

hey dibi, does herbie still shape customs? are you still sculpting? is what’s old still new and what’s new not old? ;) - P.K.
Dibi: Herb still shapes some, I’ve been writing quite a bit, but I’m designing a few new pieces, and as soon as time permits, I’ll be on it.

————————————————————————————–

mama fletch! I just fucked up my acl. no surf, no snowboarding. FML FML FML!!! how did nathan recuperate? PT? just crusiing? this is driving me shitbrains. so bummed out. - Rudy Twidlen from PR
Dibi: He rested, ate well, and then pushed himself like hell. Started out with a bit of PT, then hit the gym, rode his bike, and surfed to rehab. No short cuts, sorry!

————————————————————————————–

I noticed you didn’t do an Andy Irons tribute which I was kinda surprised about since I know the Fletchers are tight with the Irons. Good piece on Transworld there with the younger set of siblings. Just was curious as to why is all no biggie. - Danny T.
Dibi: I thought it became a media circus, and contrary to popular opinion, some things are better experienced in private. I’ll truly miss him.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, any time soon that Nathan will have a fanpage or website like Christian does? I am a fan of both of your talented and gorgeous sons! Hehe. (=   Heather Cooney
Dibi: I don’t know, Nathan’s very private. But I guess stranger things have happened, although at the present, I can’t think of one that would surprise me more.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, I know you guys get hasseled about the Bloodshot era but could you post up a photo or video of when the boys rolled through town? Brings me back to such fond memories. Thanks! - Jeff H.
Dibi: I think someone posted some photos awhile ago, I’ll try to find them. Herb didn’t go on the trip so we really don’t have anything from the tour in the archives.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi! What were the highlights and the lowlights for you in 2010? Always a fan, Meredith Quiroz
Dibi: When I sit and try to conjure up highs and lows, it seems a bit difficult as there are degrees of both. Everyone’s healthy, which is the best. I know that sounds trite but looking back over the years of huge dramatic injuries, addictions and all the other hardships families go through, perhaps something we seem to take for granted is the greatest highlight. I try not to dwell on the lows and there were a few that were very difficult, but with the passing of time, they seem to fall into the makeup of who we are… part of the life process. I hope I can live up to my expectations and that’s the best I can do for this year and all the ones I’ll be lucky enough to experience.

————————————————————————————–

Art, sculpting, ballroom dancing, John From Cincinnati so what’s next for you Mrs. Fletcher? Maybe a trip around the world as a hot air balloon exhibitionist or going to Sonoma to grow, pick and label your own winery. What is an endeavor you haven’t embarked on yet but wish to? - Mark Whitmore
Dibi: It’s funny you mentioned wine, Herb ran into someone recently that was looking for distribution for his vineyards. I told Herb I can’t take on anything else at present; he didn’t pay much attention, so I figure he’ll be asking me again soon. I try not to plan too much, you know the old saying about hearing God laugh?

————————————————————————————–

Why don’t you guys have any WW or ASS on dvd? Will you soon? Frothing for it here. - Jake Retveyld
Dibi: We’re making a new Wave Warriors, so hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy that soon.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi. Does Christian really work at Astrodeck? Is he a 9 to 5er???!!!! - No Name
Dibi: Not exactly 9 to 5, but yes he works here, with Herb, myself, and Greyson. It’s great that we’re all together and business is tough, so it’s time they all step up.

————————————————————————————–

Hi there Dibby, do you remember someone named Beverly Shelton from San Juan Capistrano? - J.Q
Dibi: No, I’m sorry, but I’m not great with names.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi! Recently read an interview with Nathan saying how Christian lived a different life; photo shoots with rock stars, famous photojournalists, etc. Do you think this was Nathan watching from outside and wanting to be included or just merely a matter-of-fact statement? Interesting lives you have all lived! - Fred Benson
Dibi: I’d say knowing Nathan, he was being matter-of-fact. He’s gone on to do so much of the same, so he realizes it’s just part of the life we live and not what defines any of us.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, was Herbie a pushover as a father? - J.W.
Dibi: Pretty much so; he was great at taking them on adventures. And me? Any one for the orthodontist?

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, Don’t really have a question to ask this time but wanted to send my condolensces about Flippy and ask how your father Walter has been doing? God bless you all. - Katie Saldero

Dibi: My Dad’s pretty good, thanks for asking. He’s certainly getting older, but aren’t we all? He still surfs and goes to work, but it’s not like it was even a few years ago. Enjoy the time you have, it goes by like a snap of the fingers.

————————————————————————————–

Does it flatter you guys when so many people look up to all you Fletcher or could you care less? I’ve looked up to Bruce Irons as a surfer though the guy seems like an asshole personality wise. But really thought it was cool he looks up to Nathan so much and so now I’ve become more of a Nathan fan and I’ve thrown Bruce to the side. I went directly to the source for gnarness. - Tim Duque
Dibi: I try never to take things for granted, and I’m surprised every time I answer questions that people care what I think. I’m not sure if “flattered” would be the word I’d choose; I think grateful seems to be a better fit for how I feel. Bruce is a great surfer and so is Nathan, so I see no problem in looking up to both of their surfing talents. They’re great friends to each other, and inspire one another, how cool for both of them.

Hey Dibi: “Can I have Christian’s phone number?”

The Fletcher fam damily back in the day.

The Fletcher fam damily back in the day.

Just to remind you guys, I’ve left all the questions written as is. I figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are and correct all your grammatical errors? Fuck that. - CF

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, how are you? I have a question. What do you think if this country were to enforce that all men, by the age of 21, serve in our military for at least 2 years? - Timothy Ryan (San Clemente)

Dibi: In my Dad’s generation, all men went in the service; he said it made a man of him and always thought it would have been the best thing for all his grandsons. I’ve always respected his opinion and have thought often about it. I started a charity to help entertain the military but have had a bit of a hard go of it lately with the poor economy. I don’t question the advantage that great discipline brings into your life, I just question the judgment of those ultimately in charge.

————————————————————————————–

Other than your father, husband and sons, who is your favorite surfer? - Jonas Vikker

Dibi Fletcher: Bruce Irons, best style!

————————————————————————————–

Are the questions on hey dibi really being answered by Dibi Fletcher? - Tracy Heffron

Dibi: YES. I don’t let anyone else ever speak for me!

————————————————————————————–

What historical person do you relate to or admire - Dan Rodgers

Dibi: There’s certain aspects of many different figures that I admire, but they’re all human with many faults as well. So, perhaps it’s easier to think about what qualities I aspire to; loyalty, honesty, integrity, tenacity, sincerity, humility and a great sense of humor will be a good start to my list.

Nate Fletcher is a beast! I’ve seen him ride slop and I’ve seen him attack the biggest waves. Did he always have balls of steel when he was a kid too? I think he surfed Waimea at 15 foot plus when he was only 12?????? - Mike Chapman

Dibi: Yes, he was always so much younger then everyone that he pushed himself to keep up. He seemed cautious but fearless at the same time; an interesting juxtaposition of character traits thrown in together.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, I read an interview that Christian did and in it he mentioned that he liked listening to Devo and the B-52’s. Never thought I’d hear him say that! Who knew Christian was such a New Waver? Ha ha ha. - Warren Alotis

Dibi: I think there’s many things about Christian that would surprise people. Most only see one side of someone and think they have them pegged, seems very short sighted.

How have you guys achieved that rare feat of still being family owned and operated? Times are so tough but I have yet to see Astrodeck ever sell out to the big stinkers. Keep it up! - Beau Marcum

Dibi: Thanks, it’s such hard work when all the big guys can out-spend you and undercut you at the same time. But here’s the middle finger to them all: “We’re not going away!”

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, so was Christian really going to run for city council are was he just pulling our legs? I wish he did I would have voted for him! Fletch man rules! - Chris Darwin

————————————————————————————–

If u were bald would u wear a wig or u dont care if ur bald? - Tom Foolery

Dibi: I shaved my head before and it was cold but cool. I wear wigs, every color for a change of pace, it’s all good.

————————————————————————————–

CF’s facebook is rockin! The things he posts are so funny. But I also didn’t know that he got deep sometimes. Love the funny stuff but also love the social commentaries and questions he poses. It’s interesting because he actually doesn’t talk about surfing much. There’s more to him and I really am a huge fan of Hey Dibi as well so please never stop! - David Knox

Dibi: Thanks, we actually rarely talk about surfing ourselves, not much to say; drop in, go for it, make it, eat shit. It’s fun if you’re the one doing it, but it does lose something in translation.

————————————————————————————–

Is Christian sponsored by anyone right now? - Dill Chapman

Dibi: Himself, and it’s perfect!

————————————————————————————–

I know the truth and I know that Dibi Fletcher is the one keeping it all together! So thank you to Dibi! Women never get the respect or acknowledgment in this Big Boys league! And that sucks! - N.S.

Dibi: Hey, thanks, that’s very nice.

————————————————————————————–

What is your one specific favorite memory of Christian growing up? - Danielle Weissman

Dibi: There really isn’t just one, there’s a million little small things that make our lives special, and a million memories that become the gifts of a relationship.

————————————————————————————–

What really happened? Why was Christian in Bali for so long? Are the rumors true - because he had to and didnt want to come back to US soil? - Mark Kohling

Dibi: He went for a couple of days and stayed a year-and-a-half, and had the time of his life! How nice for him!!!

————————————————————————————–

Hi, when are you guys going to do a D-Side with Greyson? Been waiting for it! I am a big fan! - Josh N.

Dibi: Greyson just did an interview with Jason Jesse for Juice Magazine, and so he’s getting more used to the format and feeling more comfortable so it won’t be long.

————————————————————————————–

How much do you roll your eyes in disgust over our stupid questions? LOL! - Chloe Walsh

Dibi: I try to be respectful and answer with out judgment.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, many thanks for the laughs you give me for having to put up with our questions. I think this is really great. What gave you guys the idea to do something like this? And please keep up the good work! :)  - Crystal Shaw

Dibi: People used to ask Christian questions and he’d answer “Ask my Mom” so we thought it was a good idea to go direct.

————————————————————————————–

Hi Dibi, curious to know, do you still actively compete in Ballroom dancing? My friend, Mary Bruins used to compete in your division I believe. Were you featured in any showcases? Thank you. - Victoria Mattison

Dibi: I got so busy working, I didn’t have the time anymore. It was really great to travel with my mom and play dress-up but times change and on I go to the next adventure.

————————————————————————————–

Hey Dibi, so we’ve all read how Christian was the wild child and Nathan was the quiet one. But what’s surprising to you in contradiction to this? In other words, what is Christian actually kind of quiet and subdued about and what makes Nathan craaaaaazy? - Al Thornton

Dibi: Christian is very non-judgmental and Nathan can’t stand big social functions.

————————————————————————————–

————————————————————————————–

On a scale of 1 to 10 how much of what you read about Christian or what you read about stuff in general in the surf mags is true? - Zachary Tom

————————————————————————————–

Nathan has made it known that he is not a competitive surfer but I always thought despite his image and reputation that Christian actually kinda was. So….was he? - Ray Van Duyn

Dibi: The only one Christian had to compete with was himself; all the judges gave him no points for what he was doing, so he just created different tricks to outdo the last one he had mastered.

————————————————————————————–

Dibi do you have any home remedy for the runs? All this over the the counter stuff ain’t cutting it for me! I’m in pain! - Brian Rockford

Dibi: I’m no doctor and prefer leaving a diagnosis to someone who is.

Dibi: A cat. Independent, graceful, great coat, and very intuitive.

————————————————————————————–

Dibi: We’re working on something that I’m sure he’d be stoked to be a part of. He was a Wave Warrior!!!

Just to remind you guys, we’ve left all the questions written as is. I figured, why go out of my way to make some of you guys look smarter than you actually are? Fuck that. - CF

Dibi: Not particularly. Of course. I come to work everyday. Not a beer drinker. I love to read and study, that certainly sounds dull.

————————————————————————————

Big Fletcher fan. Big what ups. Been trying to get a hold of some old commercials and footage you guys did. Mainly some bloodshot clips and that old Volvo commercial. You gonna post that up on the web? Thanks! – Bill Gregory
Dibi: I don’t own the Volvo commercial, and I’m saving the Bloodshot footage to use in a future project.
————————————————————————————
Dibi, I just wanted to let you know that I expect bigger and better things from you! John From Cincinnati wasn’t great but not bad but I KNOW you’ll be the one to bring true surfing and true surfers to the forefront of insipid Hollywood players who don’t know what we’re about as surfers! Thank you in advance! And what’s up HERBIE! – Chuy Gracia
Dibi: Hey Chuy, thanks for the thumbs up. I wrote a musical a while back about the North Shore that I think would be perfect for Broadway, but the gentleman that I was working with (who produced Chicago for the stage) passed away, and I didn’t have the heart to shop it around. Maybe sometime in the future.

————————————————————————————

Hello dibi, have the guys ever taken you to the bowl to skate? Kill it hot mama! – Scruddzy949
Dibi: I’ve gone and watched, but I don’t skate or surf, and it’s always seemed like the right choice for me.

Dibi; Do you mean here, as in, on earth?

————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, so Christian posed the topic about suicide the other day. What’s youre take on suicide and euthanasia? Christian don’t answer his own opinions on his own topics! That sucks! But so I’ll ask you since you always have a strong voice. Thanx! – Kai Peniku
Dibi; Awfully permanent solution to a temporary problem. But if I’m fucked, pull the plug!

————————————————————————————

Hey Dibi, Name 5 people you want to be stuck on an island and 5 people you don’t. No family. – Brett Jacobs
Dibi: Wow, if I named 5 to be stuck with, you wouldn’t know them so I won’t bother. There’s a million jerks out there so just pick any 5 at random and that about covers it.

————————————————————————————

Great job on DSIDE and HEY DIBI. A breath of fresh and REAL air! Christian, give yo mama a hug, boy! Best wishes to all of the Fletchers! – Sarah Howregan
Dibi: Thanks, that’s nice. I really enjoy getting to ask people things that I find interesting about them.

————————————————————————————

Mrs. Fletcher, will you ever allow a tell-all book about your clan? Actually I think you should write a book starting with the Hoffman bros! Just a suggestion. J - Chris Murphy

————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi. Does Herbie ever help you answer these questions? Sometimes I can hear him when your’e doing your dibi side interviews. Ha ha. – Ritchie Van Duyn
Dibi: He’s the camera man, but the questions on the D-Side and the answers here are all MINE!
————————————————————————————
Hi Dibi I have a request please. In Surfer Magazine there was a great interview with Nathan, something about Coming out of the Shadows. In that article, there was a wonderful photo of Nathan holding his board and standing beside, what I realized since your last Hey Dibi piece, as one of your own sculptures of the mannequins. I’ve since lost that magazine and have been trying to replace it. Would it be possible if you reposted that photo. It is my favorite of Nathan of all time. Young, aggressive surfer next to a beautiful work of art. Thank you very much. – Emma Marinovich from Newport Coast, CA
Dibi: I’m sorry, I don’t think I have a copy of the photo you’re referring to. It was probably taken by someone other then Herb.

————————————————————————————

Hi Dibi! You guys have the best Facebook pages! Love waking up and reading what’s new on that crazy mind of Christian’s! He’s to the point and wicked funny! Let him know I think he’s the best! And your pretty rad too with hey dibi and the dside ! But how about an interview WITH YOU?? J - Josh Pederssen
Dibi: That would be funny; I can ask myself questions in the mirror, or hop from one chair to the next, asking and answering questions I ask myself… that would be hilarious.
