Hi Dibi, do you think holidays like Christmas and Hanukkah mean anything anymore? Or is it all too commercial now? – Joan Schwartz
Dibi: I can’t speak for anyone else, but I have so many great family memories around Christmas. I think it’s a wonderful part of the evolution of being a daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. It’s one of the few times a year that I get to experience all the above roles in a day and I’m grateful to pass on the traditions that have become a part of my family history. It’s also a great time to donate time and or money to charity as gifts for family and friends.

Hi there Dibi. I’ve read a lot about Herbie and Julian Schnabel being friends. Did they meet through through mutual friends in the art ciricle? – Wayne Turner
Dibi: Hey, Herb and Julian meet in Texas when they were both teenagers. Herb was there to compete in a surf contest and Julian lived there with his parents at the time. They didn’t see each other for many years and were reintroduced by a mutual friend.

Dibi: That’s really sad, pretty soon perhaps they’ll have a tent at one of the “Occupy” spots, expecting another free hand out. In the words of Margaret Thatcher, “Socialism is a great idea until you run out of other peoples money.” I’m sure a lot of the companies are getting down that road about now and the faucet is starting to run dry, in many ways I think it will be great for your “sponsored” friends. It will help them become of much more value to themselves in the long run.

Dibi: For me, that’s like asking what’s my favorite color. I don’t have one, each is perfect at the right time and in the right conditions. I can’t answer for the guys, but I’m sure they feel much the same as I do.

Dibi: Yes, I do them as often as I can, and I’m fortunate to get to work with other international publications, so I have a chance to interview a broader range of people.

Dibi: They were just in Hawaii for a couple of weeks, so I’m not sure when they’ll be hitting the road again.

How old do you think a child is by the time he or she has already defining character and personality traits? – Paul Grossman
Dibi: When I first had kids I was so young I didn’t think much about it, in fact I didn’t think much at all, I kind of learned on the job I guess, but from my own experience I’ll tell you from the very beginning the boys were different. Individual in every way, from the pregnancy to adulthood, they were unique. I think we all see the world through our own eyes and there may be some family similarities but I think we all have our own path and our own way of seeing, feeling, and acting on it.

Dibi: It was just different, I can’t say better or worse because it is what it is, and there’s no use living life in the rear view mirror. Innovation is happening so quickly I think it’s a pretty exciting time to be alive!

Hi Dibi, the holiday season always sucks for me. I basically celebrate Christmas but my paternal grandparents are Jewish. I wasn’t raised with the Jewish faith but I feel bad because I don’t want them to think that I am not interested in their religion and culture. – Josh Weiss

Any new projects for you and Herbie for 2012? – Danny Marquez
Dibi: OMG, where do I start? I have nothing really planned with dates, but a list of a hundred things that I need to get done; from a new Wave Warriors, to putting a book together for it, and all the other things that make the show go. It seems that there are new things that jump on the list daily, I guess that’s why things are always interesting and challenging. Sometimes I feel like one of those circus performers that have the sticks with the spinning plates, it’s tough to keep them all going, but interesting as hell if I can do it.

Hey Dibi, wow! I am so excited about the upcoming Wave Warriors movie. Is this the 6th one? Since the last one came out, back in the 90s, what made you guys start production on WW VI now? – Gary Root
Dibi: Yes, contrary to what you might have read, it is the VI in the series. Number V we did with Warner Brothers and so there were so many more hoops and paperwork and all the other BS that working with a huge conglomerate entails. This one feels much more like 1-4; our own deal, and the timing just felt right.

So I’m gonna ask what you asked Bruce Irons. Who is your favorite historical figure? – Vance Padilla
Dibi: I admire so many people for so many different qualities that it’s hard to pick one. I just read the Steve Jobs book and I really admired his design ability, but certainly thought as a dad he pretty much SUCKED. I believe that it’s probably true in most circumstance. They’re great and admirable qualities in many, but a favorite with warts and all is hard for me to say.

Dibi: She mostly rides wave on her SUP board now, but she still surfs if the waves age good. It’s just damn cold and pretty flat now.

I read where it was mentioned that you made Nathan wear a pink wetsuit when he was young so you could keep an eye out on him in the water. I thought that was such a fantastic idea so now I make my little ones wear a bright orange and blue suit as well. Thanks for the idea Dibi! – Hal Manson

Dibi: I’m not sure what made it different for Herb, as I’ve stated before I do not like to speak for anyone else. What I thought was different? The last one was done 25 years ago, and it was amazing to think that it had such an impact that the best young surfers, who weren’t born at the time of the last shoot, felt honored to be part of the Wave Warrior Team, I think that says something pretty amazing.

Why can’t I buy Astrodeck slippers anywhere on Maui yet?!?! I ordered a pair 4 months ago and they really are the BEST, most comfortable slippers EVER! & they are really durable too! They are still like new after wearing them everyday for 3 months(they don’t get smelly either)! I’ll rep them for free & get em in shops here just so I can buy more! Aloha! – Robby Webb
Dibi: Thanks, that’s very nice. Most of the outlets on Maui are pretty tied up with the big boys so it’s hard to compete. But I believe in patient perseverance and I feel our time is coming.

Dibi: Sometimes kids don’t get the end goal; they’re so interested in the present. There are stepping stones to all learning and I learned with time how to present the material better, which is the key to teaching. So, Christian has had an ongoing learning and teaching relationship that goes both ways constantly.

Dibi: What’s enough “coverage”? Kids used to surf because they loved it, now it’s about a sponsor. I think the whole thing has changed. And a lot of it? Not for the better.

Hey Dibi, I’ve been a big fan of your family for years. I had a battle with drug and alcohol addiction a few years back that landed me in rehab 3 times, and I know Christian has had his issues along hte same lines. Thankfully I just celebrated 9 years clean, got married a year and a half ago, and also am about to finish college. My question is even after being sober as long as I have I have still felt a little lost as to what I should do with my life, what is yoiur best advice for life after addiction? Occasionally, I’ve written stuff about my dad and even post up some pics of him here on my site. He has his own website, too: www.herbiefletcher.com. And on top of that, Herbie even has his own Facebook Fan Page where a lot of people write to him and communicate. Haha, my dad’s trying to catch up with the 21st century.
Everyone knows how I feel about my parents; I love them and they’ve given me nothing but support and love back. I know I’m lucky. And since Father’s Day is just around the corner, I wanted to express that even more with this little write-up. But, you know, I thought I’d take this opportunity to also acknowledge my grandpa, Walter Hoffman. He doesn’t have his own website and he doesn’t have his own Facebook - I don’t even think he knows what Facebook is. But I feel like he’s being cheated by not having some kind of acknowledgment with an online presence. Not that he’s the type to ever ask for it…
Anyway, my mom and I were talking about it, and we found this classic photo of Walter. How cool is this? Check out the Malibu Board. I could go on and on about how great my grandpa is; what a pioneer he is in the surf industry, his early days surfing Rincon, Dana Point, and Makaha, and so much more. But instead of me writing a novel about it, I think my mom got it down tight, and got it down right:

Although years have passed since this photo was taken in the early ’50s, he’s still the same surf-stoked guy that plays his ukulele on the beach under the palapa on the weekends after catching a few waves. He really embodies the essence of the waterman and reminds me constantly what the beach lifestyle is all about. He’s the greatest dad, and like many men of his generation he doesn’t say much in the way of compliments, but I hope I’ve been a daughter that he’s proud of. (The most important men in Dibi’s life: Christian, Walter, Greyson, Herbie, and Nathan)
Let’s face it, I’ve put both of my parents through hell. But with everything that we’ve gone through, they’ve always had my back and dealt with things the best way they knew how. Without their love and support…who knows?
I’m really stoked now. Every day, I work with them at Astrodeck and we laugh, argue, and just deal with our day-to-day lives and the random people and situations that come with it. Right now is just a really great time for me. For all of us, I think. And having my kid Greyson with me is just icing on the cake.
But, anyway, I just wanted to take this time to thank my mom. Really fucking thank her. She is the glue in our family that binds us all together. She’s stronger than any of us. Despite the fact that she’s been called Walter Hoffman’s daughter or Herbie Fletcher’s wife or Christian and Nathan’s mom or Greyson’s grandma, she’s the one and only Dibi and her presence and heart are bigger than any of ours combined.
I love my mom and I’m also very lucky to have her as a friend. I hope the rest of you are fortunate enough to have that with your moms and acknowledge it.

Dibi: Christian wrote a technical description of a Judo air and posted a picture of Al Partanen to illustrate his text on Surfer’s FB page, as they had made such an obvious mistake in their description in the Tricktionary article. They deleted it and CF reposted it until they blocked him from being able to post anything. Herb went to their office on another issue and it spilled over. They finally admitted by phone that because he’s not sponsored his comments are not relevant. Pretty interesting, don’t you think??

I’m never bored, there won’t be enough time to master all the things I’d like to. I cook dinner every night and love to laugh.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Greyson much while he was growing-up, but he now lives with me so the relationship we have is ours to create, it’s not filled with a lot of memories that sometimes cloud the present. I believe we’re both very respectful of each other and there isn’t the sense of entitlement from him that ones own children have with their parents, so we’re very lucky in that sense. Dibi: It was so different then, I remember Leland Triumph Motors gave her a car to use when she traveled to different countries, as did Honda Motorcycles. She got her boards from Hobie. She received a small bit of money and product for Bonnie Bell Cosmetics and was also in their ads. Random things like that, but it wasn’t anything like now.
