Greyson Fletcher: The Next in Line

Greyson Fletcher: The Next Pilot At Flight Academy

Nathan’s been back in town and he’s been surfing a lot with Bruce Irons, who’s also in town for the summer. They’ve been coming around Astrodeck and hanging out here in San Clemente. Bruce grabbed some Wave Warriors and Christian Fletcher t-shirts. Little fucker’s got some good taste.

We’ve all been skating, too. In fact, just went last night to the San Clemente Skate Park. Bruce is stoked on Greyson and wants to take skate lessons from him. Haha, he even filmed Greyson on his iPhone going balls-out at the skate park; Greyson fucking flies.

But what’s up with all these kids riding scooters? They’re sissying shit up with their scooters and rollerblades; wearing knee pads, elbow pads, helmets, wristguards, shinguards, mouth pieces, damn hockey masks, bras, girdles, jock straps…I mean, don’t get me wrong on this subject. Safety is definitely important, especially on a little grom. But seems like kids are just too babied nowadays.

Things were so different back when I was a kid. We just went skating, you know? Just got up and left. We didn’t have to fucking make it such a huge deal to pack stuff up and worry about shit. If we got hurt, we sucked it up. You cracked your skull? Tough. Duct tape the shit out of it, fag. Brain matter spilling out to the pavement? You’re fine. You gouged your knee?  It’s spouting blood out like a sprinkler system? Too bad, crybaby. Get back on that half-pipe and don’t get off it until you do a handplant. That’s an order!

These Soccer Moms come to the skate parks in their SUV tanks and just unleash their kids, who, for the most part, are just kinda lazying around and being in the way with their scooters. And it’s so funny when these moms get all pissed when actual skateboarders come to ride the SKATE park. They seem to vibe you with some kind of sense of entitlement. They don’t like it when their little Bartholomew has his scooter kicked away from the combi-bowl.

But what I really love are the moms who bust out their cell phones and call the cops. That’s a scene in itself; When you see all the skate kids without the proper “safety uniform” run to the hills to hide. They don’t want to get busted and be given a ticket. So it’s funny when they haul on ass outta there. It’s like when you turn the lights on in a seedy motel room and the cockroaches go scurrying off, seeking shelter in the dark. Hahaha. That’s exactly what it’s like at these skate parks when the pigs show up and wanna cite the groms $265 tickets for not wearing proper gear.

Haha, that’s pretty much what happened to Greyson last night. The kid just bailed. Bruce, Nathan, Greyson and I were skating when those donut-hogging assholes suddenly showed up after some scoot bitches had a blistering hemorrhoid over our mere presence and called them. What tattletales. The next thing I know is that Greyson’s gone. Peaced on out in 10 seconds flat. Couldn’t find him anywhere. Finally realized that he had jumped a barbed wire fence, tore his pants, and was hiding out in the bushes across the street.

I should buy Greyson some camo paint so he can smear that shit on his face and blend in with the plants more naturally next time.

WALTER HOFFMAN SURFS BETTER THAN YOU

WALTER HOFFMAN SURFS BETTER THAN YOU

Well, I’m posting this blog one day early. My grandpa’s birthday is actually tomorrow, July 27th. He’s gonna be 79-years-old and he’s still gnarly as ever. He doesn’t know how to play bingo and sit down in a rocking chair and vegetate. And you know what? I’m pretty fucking okay with that, ’cause he’s radder than all of us and he always will be.

Check out the video link below for a D-Side interview he did with Dibi and Herbie.

Diamond Dibi Strikes Again

Diamond Dibi Strikes Again

Here’s another round of “HEY DIBI”. You guys have done a great job in asking questions and I have to say, Dibi’s done a kick-ass job in answering them. Gotta love her to-the-point, sincere answers. This is an ongoing popular series we have going on, so keep the questions coming, you inquisitive motherfuckers!

———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Are you a feminist?
- Solidad Gustavo
Dibi: I don’t know what that really means, but if you want to be specific I’ll give you my two cents.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
How come Nathan does not have Facebook? Or does he?
- Junichi Wada
Dibi: I would assume that he doesn’t want to, wouldn’t you? I think he calls it “Face Shot”.
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi!
Please refresh my memory as I might be incorrect, but didn’t you used to have your own clothing line? I believe a denim/jean line? And keep up the great work on here!
- Candace Carpenter
Dibi: Yes, I did in the early ’80s. It just became too difficult to juggle everything and I became insane about ballroom dancing.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi!
I read that you guys lived in Idaho for awhile. How was that for surf-crazy Herbie?
- Fletcher Fan Forever
Dibi: It was great, the mountian was unreal and had some of the best bump skiing in the world, but we’re beach people at heart and the ocean called.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
The Kyle Turley interview was off the hook! How did he hook up with you guys?
- Grim Weeper
Dibi: CF and Kyle met at a Slayer concert years ago, and they’ve stayed in touch. Kyle played in San Diego with Hank III, and on his way to LA for another gig, he was gracious enough to stop by the ‘DECK for an interview.
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi!
I have three little groms and they drive me crazy! I worry about what they’ll get into at 15, 16, and 18-years-old. LOL. Any advice on raising boys?
- Gretchen Mohler
Dibi: Hey Gretchen, I know this may sound trite and somewhat over used, but I’ve had lots of time to think about it, and boundaries are a great thing for all relationships. Perhaps the hardest thing to do - but the best long term investment in creating mutual respect.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you have an extra copy of that “Interview Magazine” you guys were featured in back in the day? Would love that! I’ll pay for it!
- Stacy Tahara
Dibi: No, I’m sorry, most magazines send like five copies, and I think after all this time I may have only one left.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
ASTRODECK IS THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Are you guys coming up with other product too? Like leashes and hats?
- AstroFan
Dibi: Right now, we’re focused on pads and sandals, and with everyone knocking us off I guess we’re on the right track, but thanks so much for the thumbs up!
———————————————————————————
What has been the best present you ever got from Christian?
- Janice Kerr
Dibi: Him being clean!!!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you still write for “Juice Magazine”? Big ups on that!
- BoonDoggie
Dibi: Thanks. In the upcoming issue, I’ve got interviews with Matt Archbold and Danny Fuller.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Did the boys ever particpate in sports like baseball, soccer, etc. You know, little league stuff?
- Brice Noel
Dibi: I think people think we’re like the Addam’s family or something. CF and NF participated in all sorts of sports and we loved it.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
You are a MILF!!! DO YOU KNOW THAT?!?????????
- WantsTheDib
Dibi: Well dude, I had to ask CF what that meant…WOW!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is the Fletcher ethnic background? Nathan said in an interview that he’s Cherokee. I’m just curious is all.
- Brandon R.
Dibi: I always laughed that I was a Heinz 57 - not ever thinking that NF would need a sense of belonging. My family heritage is quite interesting, as is everyone’s. I come from the last royal family in Germany and my ancestors discovered Georgia with a group pf convicts for the Queen. Herb’s mom was adopted at birth, and she was the offspring of a full Cherokee brave and a Swedish girl. Herb’s dad is part Blackfoot and his great-great-great grandmother was a sea captain.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is the dumbest question you ever been asked about yourself and about your family?
- SS Minnow
Dibi: The list is endless!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Okay, so give it up. Give us some dirt on Herbie. Was he a lady’s man and sweep you off your feet?
- SurfSkate949
Dibi: I ran away from home with him when I was 16, and we’ve been together ever since. I guess that says something about both of us!
———————————————————————————
Hello Dibi!
Love this whole idea of your interviews! Kyle Turley was fantastic with you! Congrats! Who can we expect for the next vid interviews?
- Roger Arieta
Dibi: I’ve got a couple interviews in the can, but didn’t want to put them up until they could be embedded on our website. Some I think, if I had to go through YouTube, would be pulled down, so I’ve waited until I can upload them directly. Who would you like to see?
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you ever think CF steps out of boundaries that he shouldn’t?
- JLK
Dibi: He’s an adult, and free to speak his mind, until I guess that right will be taken from us like so many others now are.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you ever indulge yourself? What do you like to treat yourself to?
- Nancy Klier
Dibi: It’s hard to say. Times have been pretty tough for quite a few years, but I ride my bike for miles every morning and it makes me feel glad to be alive…so maybe that’s the best treat of all!
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi,
I love reading about your and your family. I know the history of Astrodeck but what is the history of Hoffman Clothing?
- Macy Philiben
Dibi: It was never clothing, but fabric. Hoffman Fabrics. My Grandfather started it in 1925 and it has changed over the years into what it is today.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
You’re pretty. I like your picture by Mr. Weber. Do you like rugged Italian sailboarders? ;)
- Iliad Mauro
Dibi: Thank you. Bruce Weber makes everyone look great.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
You and Joyce [Hoffman] are sisters, ay? Nice looking gals! Heh. Does she still surf?
- Mr. Black
Dibi: Yes, my sister Joyce still surfs. Herb took some pictures of her the other day surfing in front of my folks house.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Have you guys ever had problems with stalkers and crazy fans?
- Breezie O’Quinn
Dibi: Some people are very bizarre, and cross the boundaries…but so far so good.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Love your advice, Dibi. What’s the best advice YOU ever got?
- Kris Garcia
Dibi: That all things pass!
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
YOU GO GIRL! About time we heard from the best Fletcher! Long time admirer here and just love seeing you on board here and love seeing that Christian has made some kind of comeback and is being seen and heard! Do you like answering all of our stupid questions? Hehe.
- Jill Franklin
Dibi: I’m somewhat surprised that any one gives a shit about what I have to say.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Are you closer with Nathan or Christian?
- T.D.
Dibi: They’re so completely different that I have the luxury of pulling from different sides of myself to enjoy each of them to the fullest.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
I read that you don’t want to have anything to do with “John from Cincinnati”. Why not? It was a good show.
- Brett Byerly
Dibi: It’s gone so who cares?
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
Do you like San Clemente? Your family is a fixture there, don’t you think? When you think San Clemente, the name “Fletcher” pops up in most heads as far as surfing goes.
- Hector Boreno
Dibi: I live and work in San Clemente and my families here, so what’s not to love?
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What do you think of all of Christian’s tattoos?
- Tatted Bruno
Dibi: I’m glad he’s not my daughter.
———————————————————————————
Hi Dibi,
I’ve seen Nathan smoke. This isn’t good and makes me sad. Why does he smoke? It’s not good for surfers and the environment.
- Tiff Sauer
Dibi: Wow, why does he smoke? Why does anybody? I don’t, so I really can’t say.
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is the best compliment you ever got? I bet you get lots!!!!!!!!
- Cici Wanau
Dibi: “You’re the best friend I could ever have!”
———————————————————————————
Hey Dibi,
What is your honest opinion of all the other rip-off surf traction pads out there?
- Peter Sundberg
Dibi: No one’s ever made a better pad for a better price. The rest have all made an inferior pad for the same price. Shame on them!!!

YOU ASKED. DIBI ANSWERED. READ ON.

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Steve Fuchs asks: What about your thoughts on training? Do you? If so, what’s your routine and diet?

Dibi: I’ve always been personally serious about training. My schedule now includes yoga, weight training and I ride a bike 150 miles a week. I eat really sparingly and I’m completely nuts!!!

Larry Jovial asks: What has been the best time of your life?

Dibi: It was really fun when Christian and Nathan were young and Herb was filming the Wave Warriors series. But I’ve got a lot to be grateful for and I try to laugh and enjoy myself everyday.

Cindy Quinonez asks: Hi Dibi. What is your daily regime?

Dibi: I believe I answered the question about my workout schedule above. After I ride my bike and stretch, I shower, have a protein smoothie, and head to the office, where it’s kind of anything goes! Whether I’m doing interviews, answering emails, or out in the warehouse shipping, it’s a job and I try to do my best. Sometimes kicking a few boxes help, but mostly it’s all good.

Cheryl Corrales asks: Hey Dibi, curious, do you have any daughters or other kids besides Christian and Nathan?

Dibi: No, I never had any other kids. I think Christian and Nathan were MORE then enough to teach me plenty.

Michael Finnegan asks: Are the Fletchers too off the beaten path? Do you do “normal” family things, like sit down to dinner, etc?

Dibi: Sure, I make dinner every night, and Herb and I sit together and sometimes now Christian joins us as well. We laugh and argue and enjoy the time together like all good friends.

Cassandra Doile asks: Long time fan of your artwork. Do you still do your surfboard art?

Dibi: Yes, I have a couple of really cool boards that I’m working on now, with stainless bases and 18 karat white gold rails. Very Jetsons!

Jean Pierre Pereat asks: Question everything that is told to you by the media! Shoot, what’s really going on out there in this world?! Too much crap that they’re trying to stuff down our minds. What do you think of it all?

Dibi: I think most of it is BULLSHIT!

Dana Finney asks: Loved the photo of your father! How is he doing? How is Flippy doing?

Dibi: My dad’s doing great, thanks. Flippy’s still in the hospital in Hawaii with pneumonia, and we’re hoping he’ll be better soon.

Lance Yamasaki asks: Were you and Herbie strict parents?

Dibi: No. I had never heard of boundaries, and I was a teen ager when I had CF, so I thought if we all just went to the beach everything would be great. I’ve had a long time to think about it now though, and honestly, I would do it all the same.

Scott Phillips asks: Hi Dibi, you are a cool mother! Do you enjoy motherhood?

Dibi: Yes, it taught me the best and the worst about myself and I’m sincerely grateful to have had the opportunity to be around such unique individuals.

Ted Howser asks: Was there really a Dana Point mafia with your father and Flippy and others?

Dibi: I think it was a term used to sell magazines by a writer trying to explain a group of guys, that while pursuing their own careers, had such great influence on future generations.

Jenn Capone asks: Hello Dibi Fletcher! Where has been your favorite place to travel?

Dibi: I think it was when Herb and I were able to go to Milan with [photographer] Bruce Weber for a retrospective of twenty-five years of his work with Conde Nast. It was so different then the world I live in… that trip is up there as one of the best.

Brian McGee: Can you adopt me? I am serious.

Dibi: Well, right now CF’s back living with us, I think that’s about the best I can do right now, but thanks for the pat on the back.
