Dibi: Hoffman Fabrics was originally started by their father, Rube, in New York before either of them were born. They got into it after they grew up and were ready to settle down.

Dibi I’ve read that you and Herbie lived in Sun Valley before moving to California. What made you guys locate to San Clemente of all places rather than let’s say Huntington, Newport, La Jolla, etc? - Marc Dwyer

Dibi: Both Herb and I were born and raised in California. I grew up in Capistrano Beach, and after years in Hawaii and a couple of stints in Sun Valley, we moved to Capistrano Beach where we lived for quite a few years before moving to our current location in San Clemente.

Dibi: Nathan is a confirmed big wave rider, and both Christian and I truly respect his talent in that respect. As for one being better than the other, I don’t think that’s ever been the case. They’re individuals and completely unique.

They deleted it and CF reposted it until they blocked him from being able to post anything. Herb went to their office on another issue and it spilled over. They finally admitted by phone that because he’s not sponsored his comments are not relevant. Pretty interesting, don’t you think??

I’m never bored, there won’t be enough time to master all the things I’d like to. I cook dinner every night and love to laugh.

Unfortunately I didn’t get to see Greyson much while he was growing-up, but he now lives with me so the relationship we have is ours to create, it’s not filled with a lot of memories that sometimes cloud the present. Hey there Dibi. What a great forum! Here’s my question; A few years ago I had seen a photo that I contribute to Bruce Weber. It was amazing and featured you dancing. Was this for a particular photo shoot with Bruce Weber? It was a bit grainy - even to the point of looking like a frame grab - but that may have been the speed of the camera shutter? I’m also familiar with the Fletcher Clan in Weber’s documentary, “Chop Suey Club” which I thoroughly enjoyed. Been a sideline observer of the Fletcher’s ever since. Dibi: I really got into ballroom dancing for quite awhile and went to many competitions. Rhinestones, feather dresses… what’s not to love? The particular photo you’re referring to was from the Fontainebleau in Miami. The event offers you the opportunity, for a cost, to buy videos of your different dances, which I did and let Bruce use some of it and also pull some grabs for stills. So, you’re perfectly correct.

Dibi, I know this isn’t really an advice column like Ann Landers but I sure would like your opinion on something. I try to please everyone and in the process, I always get hurt. I’m tired of it and now I’m thinking I’m going to start being a little more selfish. I’m very tired of getting hurt and putting in all my efforts to not get the same in return. I’m starting to get deeply depressed about it becaus I feel like I’m being constantly used. After reading Hey Dibi since it’s start and watching the Dside interviews, I must say you’ve gained a fan in me and I find your thoughts and input very foundational. Am I being selfish to want to be selfish? Thank you for your perspective. - Naomi K.

Dibi: We all have choices and I’ve made plenty that have forced to think twice. As a middle kid, I’ve always been a pleaser. There’s been great pleasure in doing things for others and maybe the way to really get that pleasure is to do it with no expectations. It’s a fine line between giving and being used but you’ll be the only one that can make that call for yourself. Good Luck!

Dibi: No, and I really wish I did. I rented a piano for awhile and took lessons, but, sadly, just didn’t have the time to practice. Took singing lessons, switched to opera which I loved, but again, just couldn’t commit the time to it with all the other work I have to do to keep the ball rolling.

Hey Dibi, sorry for the loss of Flippy. Speaking of Flippy, I’ve read about the history of him and Walter. Such rich history. I’m curious how they became known as the “Dana Point Mafia” and why they settled on raising their families in Orange County and not somewhere like Malibu. I ask this because I thought they were originally from Los Angeles and geographically thought maybe LA county beaches made more sense? - Ray Dillard

Dibi: Some writer gave them that name in print and it was used many times after, so it kind of stuck. They liked it down here because it wasn’t Malibu. It was very quiet with nothing going on but lots of great surf. They had always had a summer house in Laguna, so they just gravitated to the area when they bought their first homes and thought that living directly on the beach was worth the commute.

THE THREE SAVING GRACES OF “HEY DIBI”

Note to readers: In case you’re wondering why there are so many grammatical errors as far as the content of some of these questions goes, that’s because I’ve left them as is. I haven’t edited or corrected the comments and questions people have been asking for “Hey Dibi”. Sometimes I get a kick out of the typos and terrible sentence structures. I mean, I know I’m not perfect in this area, either. There are probably a lot of errors you can find in this paragraph alone. But, man…someone once wrote me something and misspelled the word “ocean”. Seriously. They wrote “oshen”. So, anyway, instead of acting the part of the Spelling Gestapo here, I’m just gonna go with the flow and let you guys get a kick out of the type of stuff I get to read every day.

Well, I’m posting this blog one day early. My grandpa’s birthday is actually tomorrow, July 27th. He’s gonna be 79-years-old and he’s still gnarly as ever. He doesn’t know how to play bingo and sit down in a rocking chair and vegetate. And you know what? I’m pretty fucking okay with that, ’cause he’s radder than all of us and he always will be.
